Jane Doe is Lucy Cook, a girl who disappeared from Yosemite years earlier. Chief ranger Paul Souter is her biological father, and his pursuit of her on El Capitan led to her death. The finale does not reveal an intentional murder: Paul fired a warning shot, and Lucy, injured and fleeing, ran to the edge and jumped. Shane Maguire is responsible for a different killing—he killed Sean Sanderson at Jill Turner’s request.
Who is Jane Doe in UNTAMED?
The unidentified woman at the center of the investigation is Lucy Cook, who vanished from Yosemite as a child and returned years later. Ranger Naya Vasquez connects Jane Doe to an old missing-child case. DNA testing also establishes that Rory, the man assumed to be Lucy’s father, was not her biological father.
Lucy’s biological father is Paul Souter, Yosemite’s chief ranger. Years earlier, Paul helped place Lucy in foster care after her mother’s husband became violent. Lucy escaped and eventually came back to Yosemite. Later, she approached Paul for money and threatened to reveal their connection.
Who caused Lucy’s death?
Paul caused Lucy’s death during a confrontation on El Capitan. He chased her and fired a warning shot to get her attention. The shot injured Lucy; as she fled, she ran toward the edge and jumped. The finale frames the death as the outcome of Paul’s actions, not as a deliberate murder.

The late reveal changes the meaning of the case. The investigation initially points toward Shane and the drug operation, but Turner keeps digging after the apparent resolution. Following Lucy’s foster-care history leads him back to Paul, where the family secret behind her identity comes to light.
Was Shane responsible for Lucy’s death?
No. Shane is a red herring in Lucy’s case. His face on her phone and his connection to the drug ring make him look culpable, but the finale reveals that Paul’s pursuit caused Lucy’s fatal fall.

Shane did kill Sean Sanderson, but that is a separate crime. Sanderson murdered Caleb, the young son of Kyle and Jill Turner. Jill hired Shane to kill Sanderson, and Kyle did not know she had arranged it.
What happened to Caleb, and why did Kyle and Jill split?
Sanderson killed Caleb. Shane’s cameras recorded evidence linking Sanderson to the boy’s death, and Jill used that evidence to enlist Shane in killing him. The secret arrangement—not simply the different ways Kyle and Jill grieved—is identified as the central reason their marriage fractured.

That history also shapes Turner’s anger at Shane: Shane acted on Jill’s behalf and kept her role hidden. The Caleb story runs alongside Lucy’s case, but it does not explain Lucy’s death.
What does the ending mean for Turner?
Turner leaves Yosemite while still suspended. Paul had been a mentor and father figure to him; learning that Paul concealed his connection to Lucy and caused her death adds a personal betrayal to the unresolved grief surrounding Caleb.

Before leaving, Turner parts from Naya and gives her his horse and Caleb’s toy cars for her son. The gestures offer a measure of hope, not a tidy cure for grief. His departure suggests he is trying to move forward rather than remain bound to the place where Caleb died.

Netflix’s episode guide describes the finale, “All Trails Lead Here,” as the point where Turner discovers the truth about Lucy’s death and the long-buried secrets that set events in motion. The show first encourages suspicion of Shane through the drug-related clues, then redirects Turner—and the viewer—through Lucy’s missing years and foster-care history to Paul.

That turn makes the mystery as much about family and trust as about solving a death. Co-creator Mark L. Smith described the series as more of a character study about family than an investigative mystery. His explanation of Paul’s motive is concise: “He was trying to protect his family, but he missed one of them.” Eric Bana, who plays Turner, called the reveal a “gut punch.” Netflix Tudum published these comments in its November 26, 2025 ending explainer.
