Unstoppable is a 2024 sports drama about wrestler Anthony Robles, who was born without his right leg and went on to become an NCAA champion. Jharrel Jerome plays Robles; the film draws on Robles’s life and his 2012 memoir, while its wrestling scenes also benefit from his direct participation.
What is Unstoppable about?
Directed by William Goldenberg, Unstoppable follows Robles as he pursues a place on Arizona State University’s wrestling team and an NCAA championship. Prime Video lists the film as a sports drama starring Jerome, with Jennifer Lopez among the cast, and gives its runtime as 2 hours 4 minutes. The Associated Press review lists the runtime as 116 minutes, a small difference likely reflecting listing conventions.
Prime Video’s official trailer describes the movie as an “inspiring true story.” That is the distributor’s promotional framing; the film is a dramatization, not a documentary.
Is Unstoppable based on a true story?
Yes. The film dramatizes the life and athletic career of Anthony Robles, an NCAA champion wrestler born without his right leg. TIME reports that Robles grew up using crutches and began wrestling after his family moved to Mesa, Arizona. His story involves family support, adaptation, self-determination and the technique he developed as a wrestler—not simply a generic tale of “overcoming disability.”

The film is based on Robles’s 2012 memoir, Unstoppable: From Underdog to Undefeated. The book is a useful next read for a first-person account; the movie presents a dramatized version of his story rather than a comprehensive record of every event.
How does the film tell Robles’s story?
According to AP reviewer Lindsey Bahr, the movie begins near the end of Robles’s high-school years and follows his decision to walk on at Arizona State after other programs were not interested. Bahr describes the sports sequences and coach relationships as the film’s strongest elements, while calling its domestic-drama framing conventional. That is a critical assessment of the movie’s approach, not an independent finding about Robles’s family.

Goldenberg told the Associated Press that he accepted familiar sports-film conventions because the story follows an athlete who wins, aiming to make them feel organic. He said handheld camerawork was intended to keep viewers alongside Robles as he faced challenges. Robles described his life as “a constant battle,” whether he was on the mat or dealing with family life and the wider world, in comments quoted by the AP.
The AP reports that Robles also worked on the production and doubled for Jerome in wrestling scenes. TIME says he was involved in the writing and wrestling preparation. His participation brought direct knowledge of the sport and his own experience into those parts of the film, though it does not make the dramatization a scene-by-scene historical record.
