The speaker wonders whether something has not “set,” dismisses the sun as the answer, and considers borrowing a line from Neruda. That tension makes the poem’s apparent ease of love and poetry feel more complicated than it first appears.
What is “Unfinished Poem” about?
The poem sets outward calm against inward uncertainty. Its speaker notices that something remains unresolved, then questions whether the sun is what has not “set.” The parenthetical dismissal turns away from a straightforward description of the landscape and leaves the unease in place.
The mention of Neruda brings poetic language into the scene: the speaker considers borrowing a line rather than presenting feeling as immediately expressible. One possible reading is that the poem questions how easily romantic experience can be made to sound complete through familiar poetic language. This is an interpretation of the poem’s wording, not a documented statement of de Souza’s intent.
Scroll’s subtitle, “The apparent ease of love and poetry,” captures that contrast. The poem’s closing idea suggests ease, while the speaker’s hesitation and resort to borrowed language complicate it. Read the poem in full at Scroll.
