Orchestra, mezzanine and balcony describe where seats are located; reserved seating, general admission and standing room describe what your ticket provides. Neither a section name nor a ticket label alone tells you exactly what the view, access route or event setup will be. Check the seating chart and ticket terms for the specific performance before buying.

What the main seating labels mean

Theater names are useful starting points, not universal guarantees. A venue’s architecture determines where each section sits, how it relates to the stage and whether it is affected by an overhang.

Orchestra

The orchestra is generally the main floor, running from the area near the stage toward the rear. Front rows may put you close to performers; rear rows may sit beneath an overhang. The actual view depends on the room and the seat’s position.

Mezzanine

The mezzanine is an elevated level above, or projecting from, the back of the orchestra. Its depth, height and overhang vary. At Santa Fe Opera, for example, the venue’s chart notes that the mezzanine overhang begins at Row W. That detail applies to that venue, not to theaters generally: Santa Fe Opera seating chart.

Balcony

A balcony, when the theater has one, is an upper seating level above the mezzanine. Not every theater has a balcony, and reaching an upper level may involve stairs. Check the venue’s chart and access information rather than assuming the layout.

Boxes and other labels

Boxes are small seating areas, often along the sides; their angle and distance from the stage depend on the building. South Coast Repertory’s Argyros Stage, for example, shows boxes along the sides, with some closer to the stage than others: South Coast Repertory seating charts.

What the ticket guarantees

Admission wording answers a different question from section names: whether you have a particular seat, an unassigned place, or access to a standing area. An event may use more than one arrangement in different parts of the room.

  • Reserved seating: Your ticket identifies an assigned seat. Check its section, row and seat number against the event chart.
  • General admission (GA): There is no individually assigned seat. Depending on the event, GA may mean unassigned seats, standing room or a mix of the two.
  • Standing room only (SRO): Admission is for a standing area rather than a seat. Its location and sale conditions are specific to the venue and event.
  • Mixed admission: Different areas may have different rules—for example, general-admission standing in one area and reserved seats in a balcony. Confirm which arrangement applies to your ticket.

Do not infer that GA means a seat is available, or that a location label means your seat is assigned. If the ticket wording does not make the arrangement clear, ask the venue or authorized seller before purchasing. Broadway.com’s overview also explains these seating terms: Broadway.com.

How to read a seating chart for a specific show

Use the chart for the event you plan to attend. A venue can reconfigure a room for different productions, and the general theater layout may not show the exact arrangement for a particular performance.

  1. Locate the stage and your section. Start with the event’s chart and identify where the stage is in relation to the section you are considering.
  2. Verify row and seat numbering. Conventions differ. South Coast Repertory’s chart starts seat numbers at 101 on the left and increases to the right. The Paramount Theatre in Oakland describes odd/even numbering on the sides and center seats in the 100s. Do not assume either convention applies elsewhere: Paramount Theatre seating chart.
  3. Check the seat’s position. Look for distance from the stage, a centered or side angle, and any overhang or potential obstruction. A chart may show architectural features without fully conveying the view. Use an official view preview if one is available, or contact the venue about a specific sightline concern.
  4. Review access details. Check the chart and venue information for stairs, elevators, wheelchair locations, companion seating and aisle access if these matter to your visit. Locations and routes differ by venue.
  5. Match the chart to your ticket type. Confirm whether the ticket is for an assigned seat, unassigned seating, standing room or a particular area in a mixed arrangement. If the chart and ticket language leave that uncertain, ask the venue or authorized seller before buying.

How to compare seats

There is no universally best section or best value. The right choice depends on the production, the specific seat, your budget and any access needs. Compare the actual options on the event chart using these factors:

  • View and distance: Consider how close you want to be and whether the stage remains visible from the seat.
  • Center versus side angle: A side seat may give a different perspective from a centered one; check its position rather than judging by section name.
  • Overhang or obstruction: Look for chart notes about architectural features and ask the venue if you are concerned about a particular seat.
  • Price: Compare the prices shown for the available seats alongside their location and view.
  • Route and access: Account for stairs, elevators, accessible locations and aisle access as relevant to your visit.
  • Ticket certainty: Decide whether you need an assigned seat or are comfortable with an unassigned or standing arrangement.

Why venue-specific details matter

Row letters, seat numbering, aisle positions, accessible routes and section layouts are local details. A named example should not be treated as a general rule: the Shubert Organization lists the Belasco Theatre’s capacities as Orchestra 527, Mezzanine 283, Balcony 200, Boxes 24 and Standing Room 25, for a listed total of 1,059. Those figures describe that theater only, not a standard theater capacity: Shubert Organization: Belasco Theatre.
