Barun stands apart from the familiar screen image of the forceful “supercop”: director Ashish R. Shukla envisioned a more subdued, humane officer, while Bhattacharya described him as witty, sharp and fond of Bollywood films.
Who is Barun Ghosh in Undekhi?
Barun Ghosh is a DSP from West Bengal who comes to Manali to investigate a case involving a dancer. SonyLIV’s first-episode synopsis places his investigation alongside the central crime that sets the series in motion: amateur filmmaker Rishi accidentally records a dancer’s murder and pursues justice, bringing him into conflict with the powerful Atwal family.
The official SonyLIV series listing describes that premise, while the episode page identifies Ghosh’s arrival in Manali as part of the first episode.
Why Barun is not a typical screen cop
Director Ashish R. Shukla said he wanted to move away from portrayals of police officers as invariably violent and aggressive. In an interview with The Indian Express, he described the aim as depicting “humane police” and said he wanted a retiring officer who had not achieved much and would not appear to be an ideal policeman.

That creative choice makes Barun a quieter presence in a story dominated by the Atwals’ power. Bhattacharya has also spoken of the character as an outsider in the story’s setting; read alongside the director’s comments, Barun’s less imposing manner offers a contrast to the force around him rather than another version of the all-conquering investigator.
How Dibyendu Bhattacharya describes the role
In a 2020 India Today interview, Bhattacharya called Barun “not a ‘supercop’” and described him as lively, colourful, witty and sharp, with an enormous love for Bollywood films. He also said the character’s career was nearing its final year at the time. Those remarks describe Barun and the role as Bhattacharya discussed them in 2020, not the actor’s current circumstances.

Bhattacharya separately told Scroll.in, “Half your job is done when you have such a good script,” referring to the writing and performance context of Undekhi. Taken together, the interviews suggest a character whose sharpness and humour need not come with the grandstanding associated with a conventional action-cop role.
