“Unconditional,” a 22-minute documentary following veterinarian Sarah Reidenbach’s work helping domestic-violence survivors care for their pets, won Best Documentary and Best Local Film at the 2026 Healdsburg International Short Film Festival, Patch reports. The film also won Best Documentary at the Cotati Shorts Film Festival on September 26, 2026. Its subject is a painful practical dilemma: leaving abuse can mean facing a shelter or housing option that cannot accommodate a beloved animal.
What “Unconditional” is about
Directed by Albert Gregory and Danica Simonet, “Unconditional” follows veterinarian Dr. Sarah Reidenbach as she provides free animal care to help domestic-violence survivors escape abuse with their pets. The film includes the experience of a survivor identified as Mikko. It focuses on a barrier that can make leaving more difficult: survivors may not be able to bring pets into a shelter, while an abusive partner may exploit that bond or threaten the animal as a means of control. One person’s experience does not represent every survivor’s circumstances.
The title sets this intimate story against Sonoma County’s picturesque wine-country image. A narrator in the documentary puts the contrast this way: “There’s definitely darkness that lurks under the beauty of Sonoma County — and everywhere that’s beautiful.”
Gregory told Patch that the filmmakers wanted survivors to speak directly about what they had experienced and how their animals helped them through it: “We wanted the audience to hear directly from them what they’ve experienced and how their animals helped them through it.”

How pet care can affect a survivor’s options
Ruthless Kindness, the organization connected to Reidenbach’s work, describes programs intended to address animal-related barriers during a crisis. Its services include temporary pet boarding and foster care, mobile veterinary clinics, free veterinary appointments, tele-support, and consultation for human-service agencies developing pet-friendly policies. Gregory told Patch that vaccinations and medical clearance can be barriers to shelter admission, and described veterinary support as part of the organization’s response.
These approaches address different needs: veterinary care can help a pet meet health requirements, while temporary boarding or foster placement can provide a place for an animal when a survivor’s immediate shelter or housing option cannot accept pets. They are practical forms of support, not a guarantee that every survivor will have the same options.
