U2’s final U2:UV Achtung Baby Live at Sphere concert took place in Las Vegas on 2 March 2024. Daniel Lanois joined the band for “One,” and U2 closed the show with “40,” which the concert report said had not been performed since 2016.
What happened at U2’s final Sphere concert?
The 2 March 2024 performance was the 40th and final concert in U2’s Sphere residency, which ran from 29 September 2023 to 2 March 2024. Rolling Stone’s report on the closing night described two notable moments: producer Daniel Lanois appeared with the band during “One,” and U2 ended the concert with “40.”
Bono welcomed Lanois by saying, “There would be no Achtung Baby without Daniel Lanois.” Lanois’s appearance connected the concert to the album at the center of the residency: he was a producer associated with Achtung Baby.
Why did U2 close with “40”?
“40,” also known as “40 (How Long),” is the final track on U2’s 1983 album War. Its lyrics adapt Psalm 40. The concert report described the Sphere performance as the song’s first since 2016, making its return a distinctive ending to the residency.
