Netflix’s TYSON is a four-part documentary about Mike Tyson, directed by Floyd Russ and built around interviews with Tyson and people close to him. The announced scope spans his Brooklyn upbringing, rise to heavyweight stardom, fame, controversy, personal costs and transformation. But the available information does not establish whether the finished series adds fresh insight to a story Tyson has told in several first-person formats—or how it handles the people affected by his conduct. That makes its central promise a question to watch for, not a verdict this review can responsibly claim.

What is Netflix’s TYSON?

Netflix’s Media Center lists TYSON as a four-part documentary series, released in the United States on October 13, 2026, at 7:00 a.m. GMT. Netflix Tudum describes the episodes as hour-long, says Floyd Russ directed the series, and notes that it includes interviews with Tyson and people close to him. Netflix Media Center and Netflix Tudum provide the official series details.

Netflix’s synopsis frames the story around Tyson’s upbringing in Brooklyn, ascent to heavyweight stardom, influence and fame, controversies, personal costs and transformation. That is the streamer’s description of its subject and intended scope—not an independent assessment of what the episodes establish or how they treat those subjects.

Has Mike Tyson told this story before?

Yes, in multiple formats. TIME’s 2022 review of Hulu’s separate series Mike notes that Tyson had published autobiographical books, performed a one-man show on Broadway and HBO, and hosted a podcast. Those prior tellings matter to the question raised by Netflix’s new series: whether it brings new testimony, evidence or perspective, rather than simply revisiting familiar milestones.

TIME criticized Hulu’s Mike for making Tyson the narrator of his own story and argued that it insufficiently engaged with the implications of his story and women’s experiences. Those are TIME’s judgments about a different production, not findings about Netflix’s TYSON. They suggest useful questions for viewers, but cannot stand in for an evaluation of Russ’s series. TIME’s 2022 review.

What does Tyson say about telling it again?

In Netflix Tudum’s announcement, Tyson describes the project as a chance to share his story “through the reflective lens of my growth and maturity,” calling the journey challenging but welcome. The statement communicates his own stated approach. It does not, by itself, show whether the finished documentary is self-critical, includes new information, or gives substantial space to perspectives beyond his own.

What should a review of the series test?

The premise invites scrutiny, especially because Tyson has already used first-person formats to recount his life. Four questions can help distinguish a genuinely illuminating documentary from a familiar retelling:

  • Who controls the account? Do interviews with people close to Tyson complicate his version of events, or mainly reinforce it? The presence of interviews alone does not answer that.
  • What is genuinely new? Does the series offer previously unheard testimony, meaningful archival material or a fresh interpretation of known events?
  • How does it handle people affected by Tyson’s conduct? Does it give women and others involved room to speak and provide context, rather than treating their experiences as brief stops in his biography?
  • Does it contextualize controversy? Does it explain legal and public disputes with enough detail to help viewers understand their consequences, rather than merely naming them?
  • Does the structure develop an argument? Across four hour-long episodes, does the account build insight about fame, influence, personal cost and change, or simply move through milestones?

These are criteria for judging the released episodes, not claims about what the series does. The official descriptions establish its format, director, interview approach and broad subject matter; they do not establish its editorial balance or the originality of its reporting.

Why did Netflix’s episode count change?

Netflix’s December 2024 announcement described an earlier version as three 60-minute episodes. The current 2026 Netflix materials list four episodes, with Tudum describing them as hour-long. The 2024 announcement is a dated development, not the current format. Netflix’s December 2024 announcement.

Is TYSON worth watching?

Its subject and stated scope may interest viewers who want a long-form account of Tyson’s rise, controversies and personal life. But the decisive questions—whether it offers a new perspective, scrutinizes its central figure, and meaningfully addresses people affected by his conduct—cannot be settled by Netflix’s synopsis or Tyson’s promotional remarks. A confident recommendation on those grounds would require evidence from the episodes or independent criticism of the completed series.
