Spoilers throughout. The ending of I Saw the TV Glow is both bleak and open-ended: Owen sees the TV-like glow inside himself, then returns to work and apologizes. One reading treats that retreat as proof that recognition has come too late to change his life. Another, closer to writer-director Jane Schoenbrun’s stated interpretation, sees the glow as a first step: Owen has glimpsed a truth he can no longer unsee, even though the film does not show him escaping.
What happens in the final scene?
At a birthday party in an arcade, Owen cries out for help. In the bathroom, he sees a television-like light inside his opened chest in the mirror. He goes back to work, where customers do not notice his distress, and apologizes. The film ends without showing whether he acts on what he has seen.
That final return—to the workplace, to an apology, to the effort to seem acceptable—is why the ending can feel so crushing. But the image of the glow also leaves open the possibility that Owen’s understanding of himself has begun to change.
Reading one: Owen recognizes the truth, but cannot escape
The apology is the ending’s decisive action
In the bleak reading, the crucial point is not simply that Owen sees the light; it is that he returns to his ordinary routine immediately afterward. His apology suggests that, even after a moment of extreme recognition, he is still trying to manage other people’s comfort rather than respond to his own pain. The customers’ failure to notice him makes his isolation feel complete. Vanity Fair’s interview with Schoenbrun connects Owen’s retreat to shame that queer and trans people can be taught to feel about their own existence.

A former refuge has become a prison
The arcade echoes the film’s opening parachute scene: both are colorful, overwhelming spaces, but they no longer offer the same shelter. Schoenbrun described these scenes as visual bookends. The entertainment spaces that once let Owen and Maddy hide from everyday life now feel depleted and frightening. In this reading, the film’s bright surfaces have not rescued Owen; they have become part of the trap. Dazed’s interview discusses the visual and emotional shape of the film.
Recognition cannot undo the years already lost
Owen has tried to become a “real adult” by burying the feelings and attachments that once helped him imagine a different self. Schoenbrun has resisted the idea that a tidy awakening should make accumulated harm disappear. The glow, then, can be terrible precisely because it clarifies what Owen has suppressed without showing him able to repair the damage. This interpretation does not say he is incapable of change; it says the ending gives no evidence that change has yet become action. Vanity Fair reports Schoenbrun’s account of that tension.

Reading two: the glow is the beginning of a possible escape
Owen has encountered something he cannot unsee
The more hopeful interpretation centers the image itself. Owen has opened himself and seen the light associated with The Pink Opaque, the show that once gave him and Maddy a language for another life. The scene is horrific, but the glow can suggest that a self he has tried to repress remains present and available to recognition. Schoenbrun put the experience this way: “Once you see a thing you can’t unsee, which was in my case, transness, you’re faced with two bad options.” That is the start of a painful process, not a promise that the pain is over. PAPER’s interview with Schoenbrun provides context for this reading.
Hope means a beginning, not a rescue
Schoenbrun said, “I think that’s where we leave Owen in the movie, at the very beginning of that process.” The distinction matters: the film does not show Owen healing, transitioning, or escaping, and the hopeful reading should not pretend that it does. Rather, the glow means that a possibility remains after recognition. Owen may still be frightened and apologetic, but what he has seen could become the basis for a different choice later. PAPER frames the aftermath of shame and repression as work that still has to be done.

The director’s hope is not a conventional happy ending
Schoenbrun has described their interpretation as less bleak than some viewers’ readings while rejecting an easy emancipation fantasy. Their blunt shorthand for Owen’s need to escape the Midnight Realm was: “Bro, 100% bury yourself underground.” That expresses the urgency of leaving the trap, not proof that Owen manages it in the final scene. Vanity Fair reports the remark and Schoenbrun’s reading of the ending.
Is the Midnight Realm literal or a metaphor?
The film does not draw a clear boundary between Owen’s everyday world and the supernatural world of The Pink Opaque. Viewers, like the characters, are left uncertain about where fantasy ends and reality begins. TIME’s ending analysis emphasizes that uncertainty, while Vanity Fair reports Schoenbrun describing the worlds as a slippery overlap rather than a puzzle settled by one final twist.

Within the show’s mythology, Maddy tells Owen that their suburban life is the Midnight Realm and that he must bury himself to escape Mr. Melancholy. Owen cannot bring himself to take the risk. Read literally, the glow may suggest that Maddy was right and Owen remains trapped. Read metaphorically, the same story gives supernatural form to the fear of abandoning a familiar identity and facing isolation. These readings can coexist: the film’s emotional logic does not require a definitive answer about the supernatural events.

The Pink Opaque is canceled abruptly, and Maddy disappears. Schoenbrun has connected the interrupted story to their own experience of growing up trans and feeling an unresolved wrongness. ABC News reports that the show’s cancellation and Maddy’s disappearance drew inspiration from the unsettling end of season two of Twin Peaks. The unfinished show becomes more than a plot mystery: it mirrors a life path that can feel interrupted or foreclosed.

Schoenbrun has also described television, fandom, and fictional worlds as refuges for young people who may lack language or a safe place for their identities. BFI’s interview places the film in the director’s childhood relationship with television, video stores, and early internet fandom. But a refuge is not automatically a way out: as Schoenbrun’s PAPER interview also makes clear, a show may soothe or offer a queer-coded signal without being liberatory. Recognition can begin in art without ending there.
Quick Recap
What separates the two readings?
- The final action: The hopeful reading emphasizes Owen seeing the glow; the bleak reading emphasizes his return to apologizing.
- What the glow proves: It may mean an escape remains possible, or only that Owen has recognized a truth he cannot yet act on.
- The Midnight Realm: It may be a supernatural trap, a metaphor for repression, or an intentionally unstable combination of both.
- The kind of hope available: The film permits the possibility of a beginning, but it does not show a completed recovery or uncomplicated triumph.
