Twitch Admits It Failed Emiru After TwitchCon Assault

Twitch’s initial account of the Emiru TwitchCon assault conflicted with her experience. The company later accepted responsibility and announced new meet-and-greet and IRL-streaming safety measures.

Twitch ultimately acknowledged that it failed to keep Emiru safe during a reported assault at TwitchCon San Diego 2025—and that its response and communications afterward were also inadequate. The admission came after Twitch’s first public statement described the attendee as immediately contained and banned, while Emiru disputed that account and said the person crossed several barriers before reaching her.

The incident occurred during meet-and-greet programming on October 17, 2025. Twitch later apologized, announced a donation connected to sexual-violence prevention, and promised changes to meet-and-greet reservations, event layouts, security, and IRL-streaming rules. Those announcements represent a policy response, not independent proof that every future TwitchCon safeguard has been implemented or tested.

What happened at TwitchCon San Diego

TwitchCon San Diego 2025 was held at the San Diego Convention Center from October 17 through October 19. The reported assault took place on the first day, during meet-and-greet activities.

Video circulated showing a man approaching Emiru during an interaction, grabbing her face, and attempting to kiss her without her consent. Emiru described the conduct as an assault and said the attendee had crossed multiple barriers, including passing in front of another creator’s meet-and-greet area, before reaching her.

According to Emiru, her own security personnel intervened, but nearby TwitchCon security staff did not respond quickly enough. She also said the attendee was allowed to walk away from the immediate scene. The available public accounts support describing the contact as unwanted physical contact or an attempted unwanted kiss; they do not, by themselves, establish a separate legal finding.

The disputed first response

Twitch’s initial public statement emphasized actions the company said it had taken after the incident. Twitch said the individual had been immediately blocked from returning to TwitchCon, banned indefinitely from Twitch and Twitch events, and that the company was cooperating with law-enforcement investigations.

The statement also said Twitch had increased security at the meet-and-greet check-in area, added security personnel around participating streamers, and stopped accommodating plus-ones for the remainder of the convention.

Emiru disputed important parts of that description. She said the attendee was not stopped at the moment of the incident and that she learned about his detention only later. She characterized Twitch’s account as inaccurate and questioned how the person had been able to pass through multiple barriers in the first place.

That disagreement became the central issue in the story. Twitch’s first response focused on containment and immediate corrective measures. Emiru’s account focused on the failure of access controls, the delay in intervention, and the gap between what happened in front of her and what Twitch later said had happened.

A timeline of Twitch’s statements

  1. October 17, 2025: The incident

During TwitchCon San Diego meet-and-greet programming, an attendee approached Emiru, grabbed her face, and attempted to kiss her. Emiru said he had crossed several barriers before reaching her and that her personal security intervened while TwitchCon security did not react quickly enough.

  2. Shortly afterward: Twitch’s initial response

Twitch said the attendee had been blocked from returning to the convention, banned indefinitely from Twitch and Twitch events, and connected to law-enforcement cooperation. The company also announced additional security around creators and changes to meet-and-greet access for the rest of the event.

    • The adjustable universal clip lets you attach the camera securely to your screen or laptop, or fold the clip and set the webcam on a shelf. You’re always ready for your next video call.
  3. After the initial statement: Emiru’s rebuttal

Emiru challenged Twitch’s description of the immediate response. She said the person had not been stopped at the scene and that she learned about his detention later, making clear that Twitch’s public account did not match her experience.

  4. October 24, 2025: Dan Clancy’s apology

Twitch CEO Dan Clancy issued a more direct apology. He accepted responsibility for the security incident, said it should not have happened, and acknowledged that Twitch had failed both in allowing the incident to occur and in its response afterward. He also said Twitch had mishandled communications, including his own comments.

  5. November 7, 2025: A further admission and donation

Twitch said it had failed to keep Emiru safe and failed to prevent the assault. The company expressed regret for the distress caused to Emiru, other streamers, and the broader community, and announced a donation to nonprofit organizations working to prevent sexual violence.

  6. March 25, 2026: Announced TwitchCon changes

Twitch’s TwitchCon announcement described reservation-only meet-and-greets, redesigned layouts and attendee flow, continued security investment, and new IRL-streaming rules for TwitchCon Rotterdam 2026.

Why Dan Clancy’s October 24 statement mattered

Clancy’s statement changed the tone of Twitch’s public response. The initial account described measures Twitch said it had taken to contain the situation. The CEO’s later statement accepted institutional responsibility for both the original security failure and the handling of the aftermath.

That distinction matters because an event-safety response has at least two separate parts. The first is what staff do during an incident: identify the threat, protect the creator, control the person’s movement, and preserve a clear chain of responsibility. The second is what the organization communicates afterward: provide an accurate account, avoid overstating what occurred, and explain what will change.

Clancy said Twitch had begun a complete analysis of the incident and other concerns raised after TwitchCon. The review was to include meet-and-greet sign-ups, the physical layout, increased security controls, and broader event safety and security for future conventions.

He also said Twitch would not disclose every security detail because some information could affect privacy and safety. That is a legitimate reason not to publish staffing positions, response procedures, or vulnerabilities in full. However, it also means the public still does not have a complete chronology showing exactly when staff noticed the attendee, who was responsible for each barrier, when he was removed or detained, or how Twitch evaluated its response.

Clancy’s apology therefore resolved one important question—whether Twitch accepted responsibility—but did not independently settle every factual dispute raised by Emiru.

The November follow-up and the reported donation

On November 7, Twitch issued a second follow-up that was more explicit than its initial response. The company said it had failed to keep Emiru safe and failed to prevent the assault. It also apologized for the distress caused to Emiru, other creators, and the wider community.

Twitch said it would donate to nonprofit organizations working to prevent sexual violence. Subsequent reporting stated that Emiru had requested a $100,000 donation and that Twitch agreed to direct the money to Take Back the Night, an organization focused on sexual-violence prevention and survivor support.

The amount and recipient should be attributed to that subsequent reporting rather than presented as an independently audited corporate disclosure. The reviewed material did not include a fully accessible Twitch press release that independently documented every detail of the donation arrangement.

What Twitch says will change at TwitchCon

Twitch’s March 25, 2026 announcement included several changes directly related to the access-control problems highlighted by the incident.

Reservation-only meet-and-greets

Twitch said every meet-and-greet would require a reservation. Walk-up participation would not be allowed, and accompanying guests or plus-ones would also need reservations.

This change is intended to make capacity and access more predictable. A reservation system can give organizers a clearer list of expected participants and reduce uncontrolled movement into a creator’s interaction area. It is not, by itself, a guarantee that a person cannot cross a barrier. The system still depends on identity checks, staff placement, physical separation, and a reliable response when someone violates the rules.

Redesigned layouts and attendee flow

Twitch said it was reworking the physical layout and flow of meet-and-greets to create a safer and more comfortable environment. That points to the importance of the space between check-in, waiting areas, creator stations, exits, and neighboring meet-and-greet lines.

In a crowded convention environment, barriers are only one layer of protection. The design must also prevent people from moving laterally between queues, make staff able to see the entire interaction area, and provide a controlled route for removing someone who ignores instructions. Twitch has not publicly released a detailed layout or a complete staffing plan.

Continued investment in security

Twitch said it would continue investing in security. The company had already said after the San Diego incident that it increased security at meet-and-greet check-in and around participating streamers.

The public announcements do not establish the exact number of personnel, the required training, the escalation procedure, or how quickly a response must occur. Those details may reasonably remain private in part, but they are also the details that determine whether a policy works at the point of contact.

New IRL-streaming rules for TwitchCon Rotterdam 2026

Twitch also introduced an IRL-streaming policy for TwitchCon Rotterdam 2026. The announced rules included requirements to:

  • Keep public pathways and emergency routes clear.
  • Follow instructions from event staff.
  • Honor areas marked with no-recording or no-streaming signage.
  • Use lanyards to signal that an attendee does not want to be prominently recorded or approached on camera.

These rules address a related set of event risks involving crowd flow, privacy, recording, and unwanted approaches. They should be understood as announced safeguards for the specified event, not as evidence that later incidents were prevented or that every TwitchCon now uses an identical system.

What the incident exposes about creator meet-and-greets

Meet-and-greets are designed to provide close access to creators, which is part of their appeal. That same proximity creates a difficult safety problem: organizers must make an interaction feel personal while ensuring that the creator—not the attendee—controls physical contact and that staff can intervene immediately when boundaries are crossed.

The documented dispute highlights four operational pressure points:

  1. Access control: Organizers need to know who is entitled to enter an interaction area and prevent unauthorized movement between queues or stations.
  2. Physical design: Barriers, lanes, exits, and staff positions need to work together. A barrier that can be bypassed, or a station hidden from nearby staff, can create a vulnerability even when rules are clearly posted.
  3. Response ownership: Personal security, venue security, and event security must have an understood chain of command. The public accounts raised questions about who was expected to act first and who controlled the attendee after the contact occurred.
  4. Post-incident communication: A quick statement is not necessarily an accurate statement. Describing a person as immediately detained when the affected creator experienced the response differently can deepen the original harm and damage trust.

These are general event-safety considerations drawn from the reported circumstances. They do not establish that every convention, Twitch event, or security worker operates the same way, nor do they determine legal responsibility in this case.

What remains unresolved

Issue What can be said
Attendee’s identity The authoritative material reviewed does not establish the person’s identity. Online names should not be repeated as fact without a primary official source.
Criminal case status No official law-enforcement confirmation of an arrest, charge, or final disposition was located in the reviewed material.
Detention or removal timeline Emiru said the person was not stopped immediately and that she learned about detention later. Twitch’s initial statement described immediate action. The precise timeline remains disputed.
Internal investigation Clancy said Twitch began a complete analysis, but Twitch did not publicly release a full investigation, staffing timeline, or complete incident report.
Future TwitchCon attendance by Emiru No verified evidence shows that Emiru returned to, or committed to return to, a later TwitchCon. Contemporaneous reporting quoted her saying the San Diego event would be her last.
Effectiveness of the 2026 changes Twitch announced new controls, but the reviewed material does not independently verify their implementation or show that they prevented later incidents.

The accountability question is larger than one security policy

Twitch’s later statements did more than announce additional guards or new reservation rules. They acknowledged that safety depends on the entire event system: registration, layout, staffing, intervention, communication, and follow-up.

The first statement may have been intended to reassure attendees by listing immediate actions. But when those claims conflicted with Emiru’s account, the reassurance became a credibility problem. Clancy’s later apology recognized that communications themselves had been mishandled.

The most meaningful test of Twitch’s response will therefore not be the existence of a new rule on paper. It will be whether future meet-and-greet systems make unauthorized access harder, enable staff to act without hesitation, protect creators’ control over physical contact, and produce accurate explanations when something goes wrong.

As of the March 25, 2026 announcement, Twitch had described the changes it planned to make. The public record reviewed here still does not provide a complete account of the San Diego incident or independent evidence of how well those changes work in practice.
