An English edition of Anurag Pathak’s Hindi novel Twelfth Fail: Hara Vahi Jo Lada Nahi exists. Gautam Choubey and Lalit Kumar translated it, and HarperCollins India announced the translation in January 2022 (press release dated 20 January 2022). The story follows a student whose setbacks in school and in the exams he sits for public-service careers run alongside a love story. A 2023 film, 12th Fail, was adapted from the novel.
The English edition
The English version is published as Twelfth Fail: Hara Vahi Jo Lada Nahi, the same subtitle as the Hindi original. HarperCollins India describes it as an English translation of the Hindi bestseller by Anurag Pathak, with Gautam Choubey and Lalit Kumar credited as translators.
To identify the English paperback, use ISBN 9789354894428. The ISBN identifies the edition, not the book’s current availability. Stock, format and pricing vary by retailer and market, so check the listing before buying.
The publisher calls the novel a bestseller. The sources reviewed for this article do not include independent sales figures or readership data, so the label describes the publisher’s own positioning rather than a verified sales ranking.

What the story covers
The publisher’s synopsis centres on a village student who has failed his board exams and faces an uncertain future. The question at its heart is how he can still pursue a civil-service career. The synopsis presents integrity, inventiveness, determination and love as the forces that shape that journey.
The publisher’s own blurb puts it this way: “Twelfth Fail is his extraordinary story, the gripping narrative of a man who put his heart and soul into making the impossible possible.” That is promotional copy from the publisher, not an independent review or an assessment of the book’s literary quality.
Rank #2
The book is a narrative about a person’s journey and the aspirations of students. It is not an exam-preparation guide, and it does not teach subject content or test strategy. Readers looking for study methods will not find them here.
The 2023 film
12th Fail was directed by Vidhu Vinod Chopra, who is also credited as writer and producer. The official Vinod Chopra Films page gives 27 October 2023 as the release date and describes the film as based on the bestselling novel of the same name.
The film’s synopsis follows Manoj, a Hindi-medium student who travels from Morena to Mukherjee Nagar, the Delhi neighbourhood where many civil-service aspirants prepare. It shows his setbacks, a friendship and a love story along the way.
The same page cites a 0.1% exam success rate. The page does not state the year, the data source or the method behind that figure, so treat it as the filmmakers’ own statement rather than current official data.

The sources establish that the film is based on the novel. They do not establish how closely the film follows the book scene by scene, or where the two diverge, so avoid assuming fidelity in either direction.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Who this is for
The book suits readers who want a story about ambition, setback and persistence in a competitive exam system, and who prefer prose. The film suits viewers who want the same premise in a visual, dramatised form. Because the sources do not compare the two in detail, a reader who wants a faithful version should approach each as its own work.
Best Value
The title is a fiction and drama project rather than a documentary. Readers and viewers coming from documentary material should expect a narrative built around one character.
The Bottom Line
If you want the English text, look for the paperback with ISBN 9789354894428 and confirm the listing before buying. If you want the screen version, the 2023 film 12th Fail is based on the same novel.
