Turkish authorities announced an investigation in August 2025 after a foreign tourist was filmed performing around a flagpole bearing the Turkish flag at Uçhisar Castle in Cappadocia. The announcement cited possible offenses under Articles 300 and 301 of Turkey’s Penal Code; it did not say that the woman had been charged, convicted, or sentenced to prison.
What happened at Uçhisar Castle?
The incident was reported at Uçhisar Castle in Cappadocia, in Nevşehir Province. On August 21, 2025, the Nevşehir Governor’s Office said security units had reviewed images circulating in news and social media, filed a criminal complaint, and that the Nevşehir Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office had opened an investigation under Articles 300 and 301 of the Turkish Penal Code. Sözcü and TRT Haber, citing Anadolu Agency, reported the announcement.
The Independent identified the woman as “Merjem” and said she used the Instagram account “blittem.” Those are the name and handle reported by the newspaper; the sources cited here do not establish her full legal name. The Independent’s report also reproduced the governor’s office’s description of the incident as “disrespectful to our nation’s national and spiritual values.” That wording reflects the office’s position, not a court finding.
Was the tourist arrested or sentenced to prison?
The cited announcements establish a criminal complaint and an investigation, not an arrest, formal charge, court hearing, conviction, or sentence. The available reporting cited here does not establish a later case outcome, so it would be inaccurate to say that the woman is serving a sentence or that a court has found her guilty. “Could face prison” describes potential legal exposure reported in connection with the investigation, not a sentence imposed in this case.

What do Articles 300 and 301 say?
Reports said the investigation cited two provisions of Turkey’s Penal Code. Turkish Minute reported the following penalty ranges and procedural condition:
- Article 300: It concerns public disrespect to the Turkish flag. Turkish Minute reported a penalty range of one to three years’ imprisonment.
- Article 301: It concerns insults to the Turkish nation or state institutions. Turkish Minute reported a penalty range of six months to two years and said prosecution under this article requires Justice Ministry approval.
These are the provisions and ranges described in the August 2025 reporting; they are not findings that either offense occurred, nor penalties imposed on the tourist. The case announcement alone does not establish how prosecutors would ultimately assess the conduct or whether the required approval for an Article 301 prosecution was sought or granted.

What is known about the case status?
The publicly reported sequence is limited: officials announced the complaint and investigation on August 21, 2025, and subsequent coverage described possible prison exposure. The sources cited here do not establish whether prosecutors later filed charges, whether a court heard the case, or whether it was closed. Without a verified later update from an authoritative source, the disposition remains unknown.
