He has also said he never drew the image attributed to him in a birthday book compiled for Jeffrey Epstein. The first statement is contradicted by building drawings that were publicly auctioned under his name during his first presidential term. The second remains unresolved. A federal court has said it cannot determine who made that page, and Trump’s denial stands.
What Trump has said
Trump has made two separate claims about drawing, and they should not be merged:
- The broad claim. In a 2025 interview reported by the Wall Street Journal, Trump said: “I never wrote a picture in my life. I don’t draw pictures of women.” In a Truth Social post, as quoted by The Washington Post, he wrote: “Also, I don’t draw pictures.”
- The specific claim. In July 2025, he denied making the drawing attributed to him in the Epstein birthday book and denied signing the accompanying note.
The broad claim is a general statement about his habits. The specific claim concerns one page. Evidence bearing on one does not automatically settle the other.
The building drawings that were auctioned
The Washington Post reported in 2025 that at least four drawings attributed to Trump were sold at public auction during his first term. Two show New York skylines, one shows the Empire State Building, and one shows the George Washington Bridge. The table below lists the reported details. The prices and dates are as the Post reported them; they are not an independent catalogue or a current valuation of the works.

Trump’s own description of his drawing habit is consistent with these works. In his 2008 book Never Give Up: How I Turned My Biggest Challenges into Success, as quoted by The Daily Beast, he wrote: “it takes me a few minutes to draw something, in my case, it’s usually a building or a cityscape of skyscrapers.” He also wrote: “Art may not be my strong point, but the end result is help for people who need it.” The book describes drawings he makes for charity. It does not authenticate any particular artwork, and it does not establish that he made any picture of a person.
The disputed Epstein birthday-book page
The Wall Street Journal reported in July 2025 that a page bearing Trump’s name appeared in a 2003 birthday album assembled for Epstein. The Washington Post said at the time that it had not independently verified the Journal’s description.

In September 2025, the House Oversight Committee released a three-volume birthday book it had received from Epstein’s estate. According to The Washington Post, one page contains a woman’s outline and a suggestive note purportedly signed “Donald.” Trump and White House officials denied that he drew the image or signed the note. The Post reported that questions about the book and the submissions it contains remained open.
What the court decided, and what it did not
A May 2026 amended order from the U.S. district court recounts the allegations, Trump’s denials, and a later-produced letter. The court observed that the page appears to match the description reported by the Journal. It also said it could not determine, at the motion-to-dismiss stage, that the estate-produced book and letter were the same documents described in the reporting, or who wrote them, because authenticity was disputed.

The court dismissed the defamation complaint without prejudice, finding that the actual-malice pleading was insufficient. That is a procedural ruling. It is not a finding that the drawing is authentic or that Trump made it. Later filings may have changed the case’s posture, so check the court docket before describing its current status.
Keeping the two claims apart
| Question | What is documented | What is not established |
|---|---|---|
| Did Trump ever draw pictures? | At least four building drawings attributed to him were publicly auctioned, and his 2008 book describes making charity drawings of buildings and cityscapes. | The broad statement “I don’t draw pictures” cannot be squared with these reports. Whether any drawing shows a person is not established by these sources. |
| Did Trump draw the Epstein birthday-book page? | The page was released by the House Oversight Committee, and Trump and White House officials denied drawing it and signing the note. | Authorship is not established. The court did not resolve authenticity at the motion-to-dismiss stage. |
| Does the auction history prove the Epstein page? | Nothing in the auction reporting addresses the birthday-book page. | Auction records show that building drawings were sold. They do not show who made a different image. |
The headline’s claim that Trump “drew plenty” goes further than the reporting supports. The documented record is at least four publicly auctioned building drawings. It is not a catalogue of his work, and it says nothing about the quality of the art. A reader can accept that Trump has drawn buildings and still have no established answer about the Epstein page.

What readers can take from the record
- Trump’s broad statement that he does not draw pictures is contradicted by reported building drawings sold under his name.
- Those drawings are reported as attributed to him, with prices and dates taken from the Washington Post’s 2025 reporting and the auction houses’ own descriptions.
- The Epstein birthday-book page is still disputed. The House Oversight release made it public, but no court has determined who made it.
- The May 2026 order is procedural. It dismissed a complaint without prejudice and did not rule on the drawing’s authorship.
Keep the sources separate when quoting them: the auction history comes from reporting on sales, the page comes from a congressional release and press accounts, and the court’s position comes from its own order.
