Trump said Collins had asked why his planned White House ballroom was costing more than expected; Collins reportedly corrected him, saying her question had been about Venezuela.
What Trump said—and Collins’s correction
The Daily Beast reported that Trump’s post described Collins as “always Stupid and Nasty” and said she had asked why the new ballroom was costing more than originally thought a year earlier. The report reproduced the post with Collins’s name misspelled as “Caitlin Collin’s”; that spelling is Trump’s reported wording, not the journalist’s name. The original post was not independently available in the reviewed material, so the quotation is attributed to the report.
The same report said Collins replied: “Technically my question was about Venezuela.” That distinction matters: Trump characterized her question as being about ballroom costs, while Collins’s reported correction said she had asked about Venezuela. The available accounts do not establish that she asked him about ballroom costs in the exchange he referenced. (The Daily Beast, December 7, 2025)
Why the ballroom was part of the story
Collins was covering the White House ballroom project, according to a December 26 transcript of CNN’s The Source with Kaitlan Collins. The reporting context helps explain why the ballroom appeared in Trump’s post, but it does not resolve what Collins asked during the exchange he described. (CNN transcript, December 26, 2025)

The project’s legal dispute
A December 12 CNN transcript reported that a preservation group had sued to stop construction. CNN also quoted the White House’s position: “President Trump, they say, has full legal authority to modernize, renovate and beautify the White House — just like all of his predecessors did.” Those are competing reported positions; the material reviewed here does not establish a court ruling or the lawsuit’s ultimate outcome. (CNN transcript, December 12, 2025)
Earlier public friction
An October 2026 retrospective described earlier public friction between Trump and Collins, including a 2023 “nasty person” remark. That history is background, not evidence of Trump’s motive in the December 2025 post. (The Daily Beast, October 2026)
