Why May 17 was a day off from court
The phrase “day off” refers to the trial schedule: there was no court session in Trump’s New York hush-money criminal trial on Friday, May 17. On April 30, Judge Juan Merchan said Trump could attend Barron’s graduation and that the date would not be a court day. Associated Press reported his statement in its live coverage of the trial.

The chronology matters. Trump had suggested before Merchan ruled that the judge would not let him attend. FactCheck.org later explained that the judge had not yet ruled when Trump made that initial claim; the court subsequently set May 17 as a non-court day, and Trump attended. Merchan did not prohibit him from going to the ceremony. FactCheck.org’s account, updated May 17, 2024, addresses the conflicting claim.
Trump traveled to Minnesota afterward
After the graduation, Trump traveled to St. Paul to headline the Minnesota Republican Party’s Lincoln Reagan dinner fundraiser. The Associated Press reported on the itinerary in coverage carried by PBS NewsHour: Trump was scheduled to campaign in Minnesota on the trial’s day off.
