The first trailer for TRON: Ares sets up a striking change in the franchise: a red Grid, with digital creations crossing into the real world. The film opened in theaters on October 10, 2025; Disney’s premise describes Ares as a Program sent from the digital realm into the real world on a dangerous mission.
What the first trailer reveals
The trailer’s central visual hook is a new, red-lit Grid and the arrival of beings from that digital world in ours. That shifts the premise toward contact between digital creations and people in the real world, rather than keeping the action entirely inside the Grid.
When the trailer debuted, Gizmodo’s Germain Lussier described it as an early glimpse at a different visual direction and observed that it did not appear to continue TRON: Legacy’s story threads directly. That is an interpretation of the trailer’s apparent setup, not a definitive account of how the finished film connects to its predecessor. Gizmodo’s April 5, 2025 trailer coverage.
What is TRON: Ares about?
Disney’s official premise centers on Ares, a highly sophisticated Program sent from the digital world into the real world on a dangerous mission. The story marks humankind’s first encounter with A.I. beings, making the boundary-crossing idea in the trailer part of the film’s stated setup. Disney’s film page.

TRON: Ares is the third film in the franchise, after 1982’s TRON and 2010’s TRON: Legacy. It is directed by Joachim Rønning. Jared Leto plays Ares, and Jeff Bridges returns as Kevin Flynn. The cast also includes Greta Lee, Evan Peters, Hasan Minhaj, Jodie Turner-Smith, Arturo Castro, Cameron Monaghan and Gillian Anderson.
What is new about the film’s look and sound?
The red Grid gives the franchise a visible change in palette, while the move into the real world brings the digital environment’s effects into a more familiar setting. Disney says the production combined practical and computer-generated effects and used Industrial Light & Magic. In an October 9, 2025 feature, Rønning said the film involved “2,000 VFX shots”; that figure is his reported production estimate, not an independently verified count.

The score was crafted by Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross of Nine Inch Nails, extending the film’s electronic identity through a new musical collaboration. Disney’s feature also places the human dimension at the center of Rønning’s approach: “For me, it’s the human factor and it’s about Ares and his journey and discovering what it means and what it takes to be human.” The Walt Disney Company’s October 9, 2025 feature.

At D23, Bridges described the premise as “for the digital world to visit us,” adding that the plot involves “an A.I. program coming into the real world.” The trailer’s red Grid and crossing into our world are the clearest first indications of how TRON: Ares turns that idea into its next chapter.
