No: the available figures do not establish that Tron: Ares passed the biggest box-office loss estimates. Its reported loss depends on the calculation, and the often-cited $132.7 million figure was a conditional forecast—not a final, audited loss. There is also no single stable all-time record across the sources: they use different films, dates, and measures.
How much did Tron: Ares make?
The Numbers records Tron: Ares at $142,249,983 worldwide, while Box Office Mojo lists a $220 million budget. The Numbers gives a lower $180 million production budget. Those are different database figures, so neither should be silently treated as the definitive budget. (The Numbers and Box Office Mojo, database pages accessed 2026: The Numbers; Box Office Mojo.)
Gross revenue is not the same as money returned to the studio: theaters retain part of ticket sales, and a film’s financial outcome can also include marketing costs and later revenue. Subtracting worldwide gross from a reported production budget therefore does not establish the studio’s net loss.
The film opened to $33.5 million in North America in October 2025, according to the Associated Press. That opening-weekend figure is a contemporaneous report, not a final profitability analysis. (Associated Press, October 12, 2025.)

What does the $132.7 million loss estimate mean?
In October 2025, GamesRadar+ relayed a Deadline estimate that Tron: Ares could lose $132.7 million if its final worldwide gross reached $160 million. The estimate considered more than production costs and ticket sales, including marketing, theatrical rentals and ancillary revenue. It was a forecast tied to a projected gross, not an audited final loss. (GamesRadar+, October 20, 2025.)
The Numbers’ recorded worldwide gross is about $142.25 million, below the $160 million condition in that forecast. That does not make $132.7 million a verified loss—or establish a replacement final-loss figure—because the forecast’s assumptions and actual total costs and revenues would need to be recalculated.

What counts as the biggest box-office bomb?
“Biggest” can mean different things: the largest nominal estimated loss, the largest loss after inflation, or the holder of a dated record claim. Comparisons also change depending on whether they use a production budget, theatrical rentals, or a net-loss estimate that includes ancillary revenue. These measures are not interchangeable, and the sources do not establish one authoritative, current, audited ranking across films.
| Film and source | Reported figure | How to read it |
|---|---|---|
| Mars Needs Moms — Filmsite | $100–144 million estimated loss | A range in Filmsite’s undated summary chart, accessed 2026; it is an estimate, not audited accounting. (Filmsite.) |
| Cutthroat Island — Guinness World Records | $104,982,678 nominal net loss | Guinness describes it as the largest box-office loss as of April 2012. It is a dated record claim, not a current universal ranking; the page also gives an inflation-adjusted value. (Guinness World Records.) |
| Tron: Ares — GamesRadar+ relaying Deadline | $132.7 million projected loss | Conditional on a $160 million final worldwide gross; a 2025 forecast, not a final audited result. (GamesRadar+.) |
The $132.7 million forecast is numerically higher than the cited nominal figures for Mars Needs Moms and Cutthroat Island, but comparing those numbers as a definitive record would mix different methods and time bases. Filmsite gives a range; Guinness’s record page is explicitly dated; and the Tron: Ares figure depends on a gross projection that the available final gross does not match.

So, has Tron: Ares passed the record?
The sources do not support saying that it has. They support calling it a major box-office flop and reporting a substantial conditional loss forecast, but not presenting that forecast as its final loss or as proof that it holds the all-time record. Any ranking needs to name its measure, price basis, date and source.
