How voting worked
triple j’s official “How to vote” page for the 2023 Hottest 100 set out the rules. Listeners had one ballot, and that ballot could hold up to ten songs. A voter could choose fewer than ten, but could not select the same song twice.
#1 Best Overall
Voters picked from a provided list or added songs that met the eligibility rules. The rules were the main constraint on what could appear on a ballot, so it is worth checking them before assuming a favourite qualifies.
Which songs were eligible
The eligibility window was based on a song’s initial release date. It ran from 1 December 2022 to 30 November 2023. A song released outside that window did not qualify, even if it was a favourite of the year in listeners’ minds.
The rules were broader than a standard original-release-only poll:
- Covers were eligible.
- Remixes were eligible.
- Live recordings of previously unreleased songs were eligible.
- Significantly reworked versions could qualify under the circumstances the guidelines describe.
- Live versions of songs an act had already released were excluded.
The result
triple j’s official results page for the 2023 Hottest 100 lists Doja Cat’s “Paint The Town Red” at number one. That result comes from the station’s published countdown and is the figure to cite for the top song.

What the 2023 timeline means for readers today
Because the voting window closed in January 2024, the 2023 poll is now a completed event. Readers looking for a schedule or the eligibility rules can use the dates above as the authoritative record. Anyone trying to follow a later Hottest 100 should check the station’s own announcement for that year, because the window, ballot size and eligibility rules are set each year and were specific to the 2023 poll.
The station’s announcement and rules pages remain the primary references for this poll, and the dates in this article reflect what those pages stated when they were published.
