The signing was separate from Lee’s televised return: she appeared on the Chicago show to back CM Punk in his conflict with Seth Rollins and Becky Lynch. The sources reporting the footage do not disclose the contract’s length, pay, or schedule.
What the contract-signing footage shows
On September 6, 2025, WWE executive Paul “Triple H” Levesque shared the signing footage and posted, “Ink to paper…the calm before the storm,” according to Fightful. He also welcomed Lee back, writing, “You can always come home…Welcome back @TheAJMendez!”
Wrestleview reported that WWE posted the full return segment as well as footage of what happened after SmackDown went off air, including Lee meeting Levesque to sign her contract. Fightful reported on Levesque sharing footage of the signing before Lee appeared on the program. These accounts describe related but distinct moments; the contract signing was backstage, not part of Lee’s televised return segment.
What happened during AJ Lee’s televised return
WWE’s official results for the September 5, 2025, SmackDown in Chicago identify Lee’s return as part of the show’s closing conflict. She joined CM Punk against Seth Rollins and Becky Lynch.

WWE’s current profile for Lee says she is back in WWE and notes that she retired in 2015. It lists three Divas Championship reigns and the Women’s Intercontinental Championship among her career highlights.
What is known about the new contract
The available reports establish that Lee signed a new WWE contract, but they do not state its term, compensation, or expected appearance schedule. They do not establish whether the agreement is full-time, part-time, multi-year, or limited to particular dates, so none of those descriptions can be confirmed from these sources.

WWE hosts an official page for Lee’s full return segment and a separate SmackDown exclusive featuring Lee and CM Punk after the return. WWE’s viewing guide provides territory-specific access information: in the United States, SmackDown airs on USA Network, while international arrangements vary by region. That viewing information concerns WWE programming; it does not mean the backstage signing footage is the same video as the televised return.
