Trial by Fire is Edward Zwick’s 2018 feature film, released theatrically in 2019. It dramatizes Cameron Todd Willingham’s conviction after a 1991 house fire killed his three young daughters in Corsicana, Texas, and Elizabeth Gilbert’s later efforts to investigate and challenge his case. The story is based on David Grann’s 2009 New Yorker article—not a book written as the film’s source—and the case remains a documented forensic controversy, not a judicial finding of Willingham’s innocence.
What is Trial by Fire about?
The film follows Willingham, who was convicted of capital murder after a fire at his home in December 1991 killed his three daughters. While he was on death row, playwright Elizabeth Gilbert became involved in his case and worked to challenge the conviction. The American Film Institute lists the film’s runtime as 127 minutes and its theatrical release date as May 17, 2019; Netflix identifies it as a 2018 film.

Is Trial by Fire based on a true story?
Yes. The film is based on the real case of Cameron Todd Willingham and the deaths of his daughters in a Corsicana, Texas, house fire. David Grann’s 2009 reporting recounts the investigation, trial, appeals, and Willingham’s execution in 2004. Grann reports that Willingham maintained his innocence.

The film is a dramatization, not a verbatim historical record. Its scenes and dialogue should not be treated as exact transcripts of events. For the reported account and its discussion of the case, read Grann’s “Trial by Fire” in The New Yorker.
Why did the case become controversial?
Grann’s article describes later fire-science reviews that criticized the methods and assumptions behind the original investigators’ conclusion that the fire was arson. The dispute raises serious questions about the forensic basis for the conviction. That criticism, and Willingham’s own assertion that he was innocent, are not the same as a court issuing a finding of innocence; the sources cited here establish the controversy, not a legal exoneration.

Grann reports that Willingham’s final statement before his execution included: “The only statement I want to make is that I am an innocent man convicted of a crime I did not commit. I have been persecuted for twelve years for something I did not do. From God’s dust I came and to dust I will return, so the Earth shall become my throne.” This is Willingham’s assertion as reported by Grann, not a judicial conclusion.
Is Trial by Fire based on a book?
No book is identified as the film’s source. Netflix’s explainer and Grann’s original publication identify the source as Grann’s 2009 New Yorker article, also titled “Trial by Fire.” The article is the place to turn for the reported account behind the dramatization.
