Treaty Oak Revival’s beer-slinging reputation comes from the rowdy, communal energy around “Boomtown”—but that is not the same as saying every thrown can is welcome. Guitarist Jeremiah Vanley said a can struck frontman Sam Canty in the face and bloodied him at an outdoor show in Easley, South Carolina. The band’s 2025 album West Texas Degenerate gives another kind of context: Canty described its title track as a story about working life around Odessa and Ector County.
Why do people throw beer at Treaty Oak Revival shows?
The band has described a raucous beer-slinging ritual as part of the crowd energy they wanted to bring to their performances, particularly around “Boomtown.” In an interview, vocalist and songwriter Sam Canty recalled that at Crudefest, a West Texas festival, people would crack a beer, sling it overhead, throw it down, and rage with friends. He said the band wanted its shows to carry a similar feeling.
KERA’s December 10, 2025, coverage described fans and musicians flinging beer during “Boomtown.” That explains the association between the song and a beer shower, but it does not mean every projectile is harmless or that the band welcomes cans being thrown at them.
The Easley can incident was a separate event
Guitarist Jeremiah Vanley recalled a show in Easley, South Carolina, where a can hit Canty in the face and bloodied him. Vanley said, “Sam got hit in the face with a beer, that was memorable.” He also said, “We’re all a little mad when we get pelted; I don’t understand why they throw cans at us.” The account distinguishes a crowd ritual from an object striking and injuring a performer; it offers no basis for treating the incident as part of a harmless tradition.

What does West Texas Degenerate mean?
The title track is rooted in work and place, rather than being a general label for the band’s audience. Canty said he wanted to write a follow-up to “Boomtown”—not necessarily a prequel or sequel, but another story in the same vein about working life in Odessa, Texas, and nearby Ector County. He imagined the hook as something a crowd could sing back.
The wider album connects that local perspective to growing up and taking responsibility. Interviews around its release describe songs dealing with work, addiction, relationships, family, accountability, and pride in West Texas. Canty put the regional aim simply: “I hope West Texas feels seen by this record.”

Canty described the record as carrying forward the heavier playing style of Have a Nice Day while bringing back elements of the debut, No Vacancy, and its Texas country and Red Dirt influence. He also said the band restored theatrical intro and outro elements after leaving them off Have a Nice Day.
