Trap is not an adaptation of the Hitman games, and its protagonist is no contract killer. But M. Night Shyamalan’s 2024 thriller builds a compelling stealth-game scenario: a crowded arena, tightening police surveillance, a family-facing cover, and one man trying to find a way out without exposing himself.
What Trap is about
Cooper (Josh Hartnett) takes his daughter Riley to a concert by pop star Lady Raven (Saleka Shyamalan). The arena is unusually crowded with security, and Cooper discovers why: authorities are using the event to catch the serial killer known as the Butcher. His problem is not simply how to leave. He must move through a watched public space while keeping his ordinary, affectionate-father identity intact.
Warner Bros. Italy lists Ariel Donoghue, Hayley Mills, and Allison Pill among the cast, alongside Hartnett and Saleka Shyamalan. The film was written and directed by M. Night Shyamalan. Warner Bros. Entertainment Italia’s film page identifies it as a thriller and lists its Italian theatrical release as 7 August 2024.
Why it feels like a Hitman-style stealth scenario
The useful comparison is about the shape of the challenge, not Cooper’s profession. He is identified in the film’s premise as a serial killer, not a professional assassin. What makes the arena feel like a stealth-game level is the combination of a restricted environment, people watching for suspicious behavior, and an escape problem that cannot be solved by simply running for the exit.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- A convincing public identity: Cooper is at the concert as Riley’s father. That everyday role gives him a reason to be there, but also puts his daughter at the center of his decisions.
- A changing security picture: Once he understands the sting, routine details become potential risks. He has to read the arena and the people around him rather than act as though he has unrestricted freedom.
- An escape puzzle: The objective is to get out while avoiding detection and managing the consequences of each move. Netflix describes the plot as an FBI sting and a cat-and-mouse story; The Atlantic focuses on the central predicament of escape.
That is why “a social-systems escape puzzle” is a better description than calling the film a Hitman movie literally. The analogy captures the pleasures of evasion and observation without claiming the film uses any particular game mechanic or level design.
How Shyamalan arrived at the arena
Shyamalan has described the film’s origin as a creative challenge with his daughter, Saleka: how to shape an album into a narrative and combine the concert experience with a theatrical one. In a Moviefone interview, he said they discussed whether they could bring those audience experiences together, potentially in one arena, where concertgoers hear the album while the characters experience something else unfolding.

The Atlantic reported Shyamalan pitching the idea as, “What if The Silence of the Lambs happened at a Taylor Swift concert?” That phrasing conveys the collision between a pop spectacle and a thriller, but it is Shyamalan’s pitch as reported by the magazine—not a line from the Warner Bros. synopsis. The Atlantic’s feature was published on 30 July 2024.
Is Trap based on a true story?
Netflix says Trap is not directly based on a true story, though its setup was partly inspired by Operation Flagship, a 1985 sting. The US Marshals Service and Washington, DC Metropolitan Police Department sent more than 3,000 invitations to fugitives with outstanding warrants, posing as a television company and offering NFL tickets and a chance to win a trip to the Super Bowl. Netflix reports that 101 people were arrested at the supposed ticket pickup; that figure is Netflix’s account of the operation.

The historical connection is the use of an attractive public event to draw targets into a controlled setting. It does not make the movie a retelling of the operation. Netflix Tudum’s Trap overview gives the film’s premise and its account of the inspiration.
The tension beneath the thriller setup
Riley is not just a reason for Cooper to be at the concert. Her presence makes the cover more persuasive and the escape problem more complicated: Cooper’s choices affect someone who trusts him. The British Film Institute’s discussion of the film identifies parenthood as an oblique theme, alongside Shyamalan’s interest in entertainment as part of a filmmaker’s point of view.

In a BFI Film Academy conversation published 9 August 2024, Shyamalan said, “There’s great honour in being an entertainer,” adding that a filmmaker should have “a very specific point of view” while trying to entertain people. The pairing fits Trap: its high-concept arena premise is built for suspense, while the family relationship gives the suspense a personal pressure point. The BFI interview discusses both.
