Who is the Butcher in Trap?
Cooper (Josh Hartnett) is the Butcher, the serial killer police are trying to catch. He takes his daughter Riley to a Lady Raven concert, where he learns the event is a police sting. His role as a devoted father helps him pass as an ordinary concertgoer while he navigates a venue filled with police and surveillance.

Who set Cooper up?
Rachel, Cooper’s wife, has worked out that he is the Butcher. Her actions help direct police attention toward him. The family setting does not give Cooper a safe return to normal life; it reveals the danger his family has been living beside.
Does Cooper escape at the end of Trap?
Not on screen. Cooper is apprehended after the concert and the confrontation that follows. During the police transport scene, he secretly uses a bicycle spoke to work at his handcuffs. His smile and laugh suggest he may make another attempt, but the film cuts off before showing an escape.

That distinction is the ending’s cliffhanger: Cooper is in custody, and he appears resourceful enough to pose a continuing threat, but his eventual fate is unresolved. The ending does not confirm that he gets away or that a sequel is planned.
Is Trap based on a true story?
No evidence establishes Cooper or the film’s events as real. Netflix Tudum says the premise was partially inspired by Operation Flagship, an actual law-enforcement sting; that inspiration does not make Cooper’s story a true-crime account.
