This guide covers those six characters. We have not padded the list to ten, because the other entries we could find lacked sources that would let us state their identities or relationships with confidence.
How this list is built
Ranking characters by “best” is an editorial choice, not a canonical or objective one. The picks below are judged on four things readers can check for themselves:

- Representation: whether the comics explicitly establish a relationship or identity. We have avoided labels the text does not support.
- Relationship development: whether the relationship receives sustained attention in the story rather than a single panel.
- Story accessibility: whether a new reader can follow the character from the issues named below, or needs the wider run.
- Continuity clarity: which publisher and series each entry comes from.
The continuity point matters most. The picks come from IDW Publishing’s run, mainly More Than Meets the Eye, which launched in 2012, and its continuation Lost Light, which carries the crew’s story on after the earlier series concluded. Skybound’s Energon Universe is a separate, newer Transformers line with its own series and creative team. Nothing we checked shows that IDW characters or relationships carry over into it, so do not assume they do.
The six characters
| Character | Established relationship or identity | Series | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| Chromedome | Romantic partner of Rewind | More Than Meets the Eye (IDW) | Creator interview, Guardian, 2016 |
| Rewind | Romantic partner of Chromedome | More Than Meets the Eye (IDW) | Creator interview, Guardian, 2016 |
| Cyclonus | In a relationship with Tailgate | More Than Meets the Eye and Lost Light (IDW) | Transformers.tv continuity guide |
| Tailgate | In a relationship with Cyclonus | More Than Meets the Eye and Lost Light (IDW) | Transformers.tv continuity guide |
| Anode | Trans woman in a same-sex relationship with Lug | Lost Light (IDW) | Transformers.tv continuity guide |
| Lug | Trans woman in a same-sex relationship with Anode | Lost Light (IDW) | Transformers.tv continuity guide |
The table is ordered by couple, not by rank. The guide that supplies the trans identities for Anode and Lug is a secondary editorial guide, so readers who want to cite those labels should check the issues themselves.

Character pairs in detail
Chromedome and Rewind
Chromedome and Rewind are a romantic couple in More Than Meets the Eye. Writer James Roberts has said he made the relationship explicit and has described the pair as essentially husbands. Because the relationship is written into the main story rather than a side plot, it is the strongest case on this list for a reader who wants to see a queer relationship treated as ordinary within the series. Start with the issues in the reading order below, and watch how the other characters respond to them, since Roberts’s own comments on that point are covered in the next section.
Cyclonus and Tailgate
Cyclonus and Tailgate form the second established couple in the IDW run. The relationship appears in More Than Meets the Eye and carries into Lost Light. Because the pair spans both series, they are a good test of whether a reader can follow the relationship across a longer run without a guide. The Transformers.tv continuity guide points readers to More Than Meets the Eye #12 as the issue where the book makes same-sex relationships explicit.
Rank #2
Anode and Lug
Anode and Lug are introduced in Lost Light and, according to the Transformers.tv continuity guide, are trans women in a same-sex relationship. The guide associates Lost Light #8 with their identities and relationship. This is the most recent pairing on the list and the one that depends most on the wider run, so read the issues in sequence rather than jumping in at #8.
What James Roberts said
Roberts, the writer of More Than Meets the Eye, discussed how the book treats Chromedome and Rewind’s relationship in a 2016 Guardian interview. He said: “There’s never been any scene – nor will there be – where other Transformers remark upon them being together.”
Rank #3
The same report quotes him on the broader approach to relationships in the book: “If two characters were in a relationship, the probability was they were both going to be men.”
Both remarks describe Roberts’s approach to this specific IDW run. They are not a statement about every Transformers continuity, including Energon Universe.
Rank #4
Where to start reading
- Read More Than Meets the Eye from the beginning. The Chromedome and Rewind relationship and the earlier Cyclonus and Tailgate material both sit in this series. Begin with the first collected volume and read in publication order.
- Move to More Than Meets the Eye #12. The continuity guide identifies this issue as the point where the book makes same-sex relationships explicit.
- Continue into Lost Light. The series carries the crew’s story forward and includes the Cyclonus and Tailgate relationship.
- Read Lost Light #8. This is where the guide places Anode and Lug’s identities and relationship.
Check current collected editions and their contents with a comics retailer or your library before you buy, because collection titles and volume numbering change over time.

- We found no reliable statistic on LGBTQ+ representation across Transformers comics, such as a character count or readership figure. None is offered here.
- The character-level facts above come from the creator interview, the Transformers.tv continuity guide, and an earlier representation analysis by Women Write About Comics. We have not confirmed any entry that depends on fan-maintained character listings. Those listings name more pairings than this guide includes, but we have not verified them against issues or reliable reporting.
- Arc, accessibility, and reader-experience judgments are the editor’s reading of the named issues. They are not measurements.
If you find a ranking of ten Transformers LGBTQ+ characters, check which continuity it covers and whether each entry is sourced to an issue, a creator, or a publisher. Those three checks will separate verified picks from guesses.
