Trace Adkins has survived a series of serious accidents, a 1994 gunshot wound, and a 2002 utility-vehicle rollover. The accounts span contemporaneous reporting, later profiles, and Adkins’s own recollections—and they do not agree on every date or detail. The clearest picture is a sequence of reported incidents, not one definitive firsthand chronology.
What happened to Trace Adkins?
Accounts of Adkins’s injuries begin in his teenage years and continue through his work in the oil fields, a shooting in 1994, and a property accident in 2002. The Associated Press’s 1998 profile records several early incidents; a 2022 PEOPLE profile adds a different date for an oil-tank explosion and reports another episode at sea. Later reporting and Adkins’s interviews clarify some details, but not all.
His teenage crash and oil-field injuries
Pickup collision with a school bus
The Associated Press reported that Adkins was 17 when he drove his pickup into an empty, parked school bus. The collision punctured his lungs, broke ribs, and severed his nose; the AP said his nose was later reattached. This account comes from the 1998 profile, rather than a medical record or a contemporaneous report of the crash. Associated Press, published by The Spokesman-Review, February 8, 1998.
Bulldozer, oil-tank, and truck accidents
The AP profile says Adkins nearly lost both legs in a bulldozer accident while working in the oil fields in 1982. It places an oil-tank explosion that crushed his left leg in 1988, and says he flipped a truck that year and injured his neck.

The oil-tank timing is disputed in the later account: PEOPLE’s 2022 profile says a 400-barrel tank exploded less than a year after the 1982 bulldozer incident. PEOPLE also reports that Hurricane Chantal stranded Adkins and nine other workers in the Gulf of Mexico in 1989. That episode appears in the PEOPLE account but not in the AP chronology.

Severed pinkie
During his oil-rig years, Adkins severed his left pinkie while opening a can with a knife. Cowboys & Indians says surgeons reattached it. The AP account adds that Adkins asked doctors to set the finger at an angle that would help him play guitar. How was Trace Adkins shot?
In 1994, Adkins suffered a gunshot wound during an argument with his second wife. The AP profile says the bullet struck his heart area and that no charges were filed. PEOPLE describes a more severe path, saying the bullet passed through his heart and both lungs, and reports that he underwent emergency open-heart surgery. What happened in the 2002 property accident?
On October 7, 2002, a small tractor overturned while Adkins was building a gravel road on his property. Pollstar’s report, published three days later, quoted treating physician Dr. Craig Farrell describing a chest crush injury, separation of the ribs from the sternum, and bruising to the shoulder and pelvis. Farrell said Adkins was alert and stable but remained under observation to rule out a cardiac contusion. Pollstar, October 10, 2002.
In a 2012 interview, Adkins clarified that the vehicle was a Kawasaki Mule utility task vehicle (UTV), rather than a conventional tractor. He recalled the incident with the warning, “Don’t operate heavy equipment when you’re hammered.” Cowboys & Indians, April 23, 2012.

How Adkins has described surviving
In the AP’s 1998 profile, Adkins said the experiences had given him “almost a sense of indestructibility.” That remark sits alongside an extraordinary run of reported injuries; it does not mean he described himself as fearless.
In PEOPLE’s 2022 profile, he reflected, “It wasn’t my time to go,” and said, “I’m fortunate to still be here.” The article’s headline uses the latter phrase to frame a survival story told across decades and through accounts that vary in precision.
