Trace Adkins’ Divorce Case Concluded; Reports Say He Received Nearly $1 Million in Attorney Fees

The reported $1 million refers to attorney fees, not a divorce settlement. Here is the case timeline and what the Tennessee appeals court decided.

Trace Adkins did not receive a reported $1 million divorce settlement. A December 2024 report said he had been awarded nearly $1 million in attorney fees in earlier rulings, plus another $179,402.25 in a May 2024 decision. The divorce case began in 2014; its final trial-court order came in 2022, followed by an appeals-court decision in 2023.

What the reported $1 million refers to

The figure refers to attorney fees, not a settlement payout to Adkins. In a December 11, 2024 report, In Touch, republished by Yahoo Entertainment, said the court awarded him an additional $179,402.25 in attorney fees in May 2024, on top of earlier fee awards described as nearly $1 million. The report did not provide an exact cumulative total, so the amounts should not be combined into a precise figure.

The specific 2024 amount and earlier total are reported by In Touch; the underlying fee-award documents were not independently available for review here. The Tennessee Court of Appeals’ opinion independently establishes the case’s earlier procedural history and its 2023 disposition, but it does not establish those 2024 fee figures. How the divorce case unfolded

Date Event
2014 Rhonda Forlaw Adkins initiated the divorce action, according to the Tennessee Court of Appeals.
May 28, 2015 The couple signed a marital dissolution agreement covering property, spousal support and custody. It specified that the divorce would be granted on the ground of irreconcilable differences.
January 7, 2017 The trial court enforced the agreement, finding it remained valid despite dismissal of the original action.
July 19, 2022 The trial court issued a final order resolving the remaining issues. The appellate opinion says the divorce action was not finalized until 2022.
August 24, 2023 The Tennessee Court of Appeals affirmed the divorce on irreconcilable-differences grounds, modified the decree to award the divorce to Rhonda as the agreement specified, and awarded Trace appellate attorney fees under the agreement.
May 2024 In Touch later reported that the court awarded Trace an additional $179,402.25 in attorney fees.
December 11, 2024 In Touch published a report describing the dispute as concluded and quoted Trace’s attorney, Larry Hayes.

The court’s opinion describes the distinction between the decree entered in 2017 and the action’s eventual finalization: “This is an appeal from a divorce decree that was initially entered in 2017, but the divorce action was not finalized until 2022.” Tennessee Court of Appeals opinion, August 24, 2023.

What the appeals court decided

In its August 24, 2023 opinion, the Tennessee Court of Appeals affirmed the divorce on the agreed ground of irreconcilable differences, modified the decree so Rhonda was awarded the divorce as the 2015 agreement provided, and awarded Trace appellate attorney fees under that agreement. That ruling is distinct from the later 2024 report about an additional fee award.

What “the divorce is concluded” means here

In the December 2024 report, Adkins’s attorney Larry Hayes said Rhonda had no further avenues available to challenge the settlement and described the divorce as concluded. That is Hayes’s statement as quoted in a news report, not a direct quotation from the appeals court or a new judicial ruling. The court opinion documents the appellate disposition through August 2023; the later claim about further challenges comes from counsel’s reported comment.
