What the story is about
Pixar describes the film’s central setup as a clash between old and new kinds of play. Bonnie is eight years old. Her smart tablet, Lilypad, encourages her to connect with her dance-class friends through an online space called “The Pond.” Pixar says Bonnie’s classmates prefer screens, and Bonnie begins to wonder whether she is too old for playtime. Disney+ summarizes the premise as “Toy meets Tech.”

The toys are pulled into that conflict. Pixar says Woody, Buzz and Jessie face a challenge to their place in Bonnie’s life. Disney+ frames Woody’s return as prompted by news that his friends may be in trouble. Pixar adds that Woody has been away with Bo Peep and a toy-rescue squad and must reunite with Buzz to find the missing Jessie and Bullseye.
Pixar also gives a creative rationale. Visual effects supervisor Thomas Jordan is quoted on the Pixar page: “The idea was, ‘What if all kids have their own unique way of imagining playtime?'” That question explains why the film treats Bonnie’s technology as something that reshapes play rather than simply replacing it.
