Spoilers for S.W.A.T. Season 7, Episode 7, “Last Call.” Dominique Luca survives the shooting, but permanent nerve damage leaves him unable to return to field duty. Because he does not want a desk job, he retires from the team. Actor Kenny Johnson says the decision is especially painful because Luca’s identity and sense of purpose are bound to serving in the field.
What happened to Luca in Season 7?
After Luca is shot, he tries to rehabilitate so he can rejoin the team. His survival initially leaves that possibility open, but his recovery brings a harder answer: lasting nerve damage means his hand and arm will not work as they did before. He cannot resume active field work.

The episode, “Last Call,” makes clear that Luca is not killed in the shooting. Instead, he faces the end of the career he has built around going out with his teammates.
Why does Luca retire instead of taking another role?
Luca does not want a desk or supervisory job. For him, serving means being out in the field, helping people directly. When that is no longer possible, staying with S.W.A.T. in a different capacity does not feel like a fitting alternative.
#1 Best Overall
Johnson put Luca’s reaction bluntly in a TV Insider interview published April 5, 2024: That’s a tough pill to swallow. I can’t do a desk job.
He said Luca struggles to accept that he can no longer go out and perform at his best.
Why is Luca’s exit so emotional?
The injury ends more than Luca’s field career; it disrupts the way he understands his purpose. Johnson described Luca as someone whose “whole heart and conscience” are about giving, saving, and protecting. He also said Luca was “born into S.W.A.T.” and had known little beyond that world, making it difficult to imagine what comes next.

Hondo encourages Luca to consider a life beyond the team, but the conversation does not erase the loss. Luca has to face what he is giving up before he can begin to accept a new direction.
How does Luca’s farewell happen in “Last Call”?
Luca speaks with Hondo on the beach, then makes the call that marks the end of his watch. It is a retirement farewell, not a death scene: he leaves because his injury prevents him from returning to the work he wants to do.

Johnson said the goodbye also carried his own feelings about leaving the cast. He drew on the years he had worked with his colleagues, which made the scene emotional for him as well as for Luca. That personal connection helps explain the farewell’s weight without changing the on-screen reason for the character’s departure.

Johnson’s interview explains Luca’s story and the emotion he brought to the farewell. It does not establish a contract, scheduling issue, or other production decision as the reason for Johnson’s exit, so those should not be confused with the character’s stated reason for retiring.
