Tory Lanez was attacked at California Correctional Institution in Tehachapi on May 12, 2025, and prison staff transported him to an outside medical facility after calling 911 and providing medical aid. The California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation’s initial statement did not specify the attack method or number of injuries; the reported wound counts came from Lanez’s verified Instagram account and, later, allegations in a lawsuit.
What happened at the prison
The attack occurred at about 7:20 a.m. in a housing unit at California Correctional Institution (CCI) in Tehachapi, California, according to a CDCR spokesperson quoted by The Associated Press and CBS Los Angeles.

CDCR spokesperson Pedro Calderón Michel said staff responded, activated 911, began medical aid and transported Lanez—whose legal name is Daystar Peterson—to an outside medical facility. The initial official account confirmed the response and transfer, but did not identify a specific hospital, describe the attack method or give an injury count. The prison investigative unit and Kern County District Attorney’s Office were investigating, according to the initial reports.
What was reported about Lanez’s injuries
On May 12, a post on Lanez’s verified Instagram account said he had been stabbed 14 times and that both of his lungs collapsed. ABC News and the AP reported those details as claims from the account, not as an injury tally released by CDCR.

On May 14, the AP reported that Lanez was in fair condition a day after the attack. That is a dated condition update, not confirmation of his current medical status.
Who was identified as the alleged attacker?
In a May 14, 2025 report, the AP said authorities identified fellow inmate Santino Casio as the alleged attacker. The report supports describing Casio as an alleged attacker; it does not establish a criminal adjudication of the prison assault. The AP’s report is available here.

What the later lawsuit alleges
In April 2026, the AP reported that Lanez filed a federal lawsuit seeking $100 million. The suit reportedly alleges that he should not have been housed with Casio and that officials failed to protect him. These are claims in a lawsuit, not court findings or admissions by CDCR.
The AP’s account of the complaint describes it as alleging 16 stab wounds. That differs from the 14 wounds reported from Lanez’s verified Instagram account on the day of the attack. The two figures come from separate accounts at different times; neither should be presented as an official CDCR count. The lawsuit report is available from the AP.
