The 50th Toronto International Film Festival ran September 4–14, 2025. The films below are an editorial shortlist of the feature premieres and high-profile selections that drew the most attention from that edition’s lineup. It is not an official TIFF ranking, and it is not a measured poll of audience interest. The festival has now concluded, so read this as a guide to what was on the 2025 program rather than to an upcoming one.
How this shortlist was chosen
Four criteria shaped the selection. The first is premiere status: whether a film was a world premiere in Toronto, a Toronto debut, or had already been shown at another major festival. The second is talent, meaning the director, the cast, and whether the film extends a known filmmaker’s body of work. The third is the story hook, whether that is a biography, a literary adaptation, a period drama, a crime story, a mystery, or a disaster drama. The fourth is the balance between festival discovery and broad recognition, since the list mixes prestige titles from Cannes with major stars and recognizable properties.
These criteria are applied editorially. No score, survey, or numerical ranking is implied.
The feature shortlist
The table covers the films in this guide. Where a source did not state a film’s premiere status or director, the cell says so rather than guessing.

Films with Venice or Telluride context

Cannes standouts that also played Toronto
Four films that screened at Cannes also appeared in Toronto, and AP names them as Cannes standouts: It Was Just an Accident, Sentimental Value, Sirât, and Nouvelle Vague. For viewers who want international cinema from the festival, this group is the natural starting point. Their prior Cannes attention is the key context to keep in mind when comparing them with the world premieres above.
Short Cuts
TIFF’s official announcement for its Short Cuts program described 48 short films from 28 countries, including 20 Canadian titles, presented across seven programs. These figures describe Short Cuts only, not the festival as a whole. Among its world premieres were Idris Elba’s Dust to Dreams, The Contestant, and DISC.

If you are looking for a film, check the distributor’s or platform’s current listing in your territory, since release windows vary by country.
