After a Mother’s Day photo of her breastfeeding while holding a headstand drew both praise and criticism, Olympic snowboarder Torah Bright urged mothers to encourage one another rather than compare or judge each other. The image, she said, was intended as fun and as a celebration of the bond between mother and child.
What Torah Bright’s Mother’s Day post showed
In a post shared for Mother’s Day in 2021, Bright appeared breastfeeding her son Flow while holding a headstand, according to PerthNow’s report of 19 May 2021 and 7NEWS’ report, published 19 May and updated 24 May 2021. PerthNow reproduced a caption celebrating motherhood and expressing the wish that mothers be heard, respected, honoured and encouraged to trust their intuition.
How Bright responded to the mixed reaction
The reports describe a mix of positive comments and criticism, including reactions to the pose and what people thought the image conveyed. They do not establish how representative those responses were. Bright called the image “just a little bit of pure fun” and said it celebrated the mother-child bond, while acknowledging that it would not appeal to everyone, according to 7NEWS.
Her response shifted the focus from whether people liked the image to how mothers treat one another. PerthNow reported her saying: “Mothers, we need to encourage each other. We need to lift each other up. We need to pay each other compliments. We need to support each other. We need to be each others’ biggest cheerleaders.”

Bright also said mothers needed to “have each other’s back” rather than compare and judge each other. 7NEWS reported her adding that mothers “all do think so differently.”
The point of her appeal
Bright’s message was a call for mutual support across different choices and viewpoints about motherhood—not a demand that everyone approve of one image. Her appeal was to make room for those differences without turning them into reasons to judge other mothers.

7NEWS identifies Bright as an Australian snowboarder who carried Australia’s flag at the 2010 Vancouver Winter Olympics and won gold in snowboard halfpipe at those Games. The outlet’s report is the source for those biographical details.
