Kilmer built a varied screen career, with roles in Willow, The Doors, Tombstone, Batman Forever and Heat. He later wrote about his life and work in a 2020 memoir, after a throat-cancer diagnosis. In 2022, he returned as Iceman in Top Gun: Maverick.
Kilmer died on April 1, 2025, aged 65. El País reported that Cruise honored him at CinemaCon, describing him in his remarks as a dear friend and expressing gratitude for Kilmer’s contributions to both Top Gun films.
