In GOBankingRates’ June 22, 2025 ranking, T’Challa, also known as Black Panther, is estimated to be the richest fictional character, at $90 trillion. Scrooge McDuck ranks second at $65.4 billion, followed by Smaug at $54.1 billion. These are a publisher’s estimates, not canonical or audited net-worth figures; the T’Challa entry in particular draws on Wakanda’s national vibranium reserves as well as a much lower alternative estimate for Black Panther’s personal wealth.
The 15 richest fictional characters in GOBankingRates’ 2025 ranking
The figures below are estimates published by GOBankingRates on June 22, 2025. They reflect the article’s assumptions about each character’s wealth and are not independently verified financial statements.
| Rank | Character | Published estimate | Stated source of wealth |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | T’Challa / Black Panther | $90 trillion | King of Wakanda; the estimate draws on the country’s vibranium reserves and notes a lower alternative estimate for Black Panther’s personal wealth. |
| 2 | Scrooge McDuck | $65.4 billion | Mining and milling, alongside the famous money bin. |
| 3 | Smaug | $54.1 billion | A treasure hoard described in The Hobbit. |
| 4 | Tony Stark | $43.4 billion | Stark Industries, inventions, investments and property. |
| 5 | Oliver “Daddy” Warbucks | $36.2 billion | Warbucks Industries and defense contracting. |
| 6 | Bruce Wayne | $31.3 billion | Wayne Enterprises and inherited wealth. |
| 7 | Forrest Gump | $27 billion | Shrimp sales and investments; the article attributes much of the estimate to an investment in Apple. |
| 8 | Richie Rich | $23.9 billion | Wealthy child and heir. |
| 9 | C. Montgomery Burns | $10.4 billion | Ownership of a power plant. |
| 10 | Lex Luthor | $10.1 billion | Business interests including LexCorp. |
| 11 | Willy Wonka | $8.4 billion | Candy making and factory ownership. |
| 12 | Jabba the Hutt | $8.4 billion | Criminal enterprise. |
| 13 | Charles Foster Kane | $5.8 billion | Media empire. |
| 14 | Lara Croft | $1.3 billion | Archaeology and inherited wealth. |
| 15 | Rich Uncle Pennybags / Mr. Monopoly | $1.2 billion | Real-estate investments. |
Why the top estimate needs a qualification
The $90 trillion figure for T’Challa is not a straightforward estimate of an individual’s assets. GOBankingRates grounds it in Wakanda’s vibranium reserves, which makes the number closer to a valuation of national resources than a clean personal net worth. The same article also mentions a much lower alternative estimate for Black Panther personally. The two figures represent different ways of defining wealth and should not be treated as interchangeable.
Other entries also mix unlike categories: personal fortunes, inherited family wealth, company ownership, accumulated treasure and control of a country’s resources. Fictional stories rarely provide the balance sheets, ownership rules or valuations needed to compare these consistently.

How the 2025 list compares with Forbes’ earlier rankings
Forbes published its own Fictional Fifteen rankings in 2002 and 2005. The order and estimates differ from GOBankingRates’ 2025 list, in part because the selections and assumptions vary by publication and year.
| Character | GOBankingRates, 2025 | Forbes, 2005 | Forbes, September 2002 |
|---|---|---|---|
| Santa Claus | Not included in the 15-character ranking (GOBankingRates, 2025) | Ranked first; estimated wealth was infinite (Forbes, 2005) | Ranked first (Forbes, September 2002) |
| Oliver Warbucks | $36.2 billion; rank 5 (GOBankingRates, 2025) | $27.3 billion; rank 2 (Forbes, 2005) | $10 billion; rank 3 (Forbes, September 2002) |
| Richie Rich | $23.9 billion; rank 8 (GOBankingRates, 2025) | $17 billion; rank 3 (Forbes, 2005) | $24.7 billion; rank 2 (Forbes, September 2002) |
| Scrooge McDuck | $65.4 billion; rank 2 (GOBankingRates, 2025) | $8.2 billion; rank 6 (Forbes, 2005) | $8.2 billion; rank 4 (Forbes, September 2002) |
The Forbes lists also included characters absent from the 2025 GOBankingRates ranking. Its 2005 selection included Jed Clampett, Thurston Howell III and Ebenezer Scrooge; the September 2002 list included J.R. Ewing, Auric Goldfinger, Gordon Gekko and Jay Gatsby. Forbes’ 2002 editors, Michael Noer and Dan Ackman, explicitly acknowledged their interpretive approach: “In creating this list we took certain minor liberties with the stories as presented on the page or on the screen.”
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What these rankings can—and cannot—tell you
- They are dated published estimates. GOBankingRates’ list is a June 2025 ranking, not a definitive or official statement of fictional wealth.
- The assumptions differ. A fortune based on a company, a hoard, an inheritance or a nation’s resources cannot be compared without deciding what counts as the character’s own wealth.
- Rankings are not updates to one another. Forbes’ earlier figures are useful historical comparisons, not revised values for the GOBankingRates list.
- Numbers depend on the story version. Fictional characters can appear in different works and continuities, and the relevant assets may not be defined consistently.
For those reasons, the most accurate way to use the list is to name its publisher and year whenever citing a figure, and to describe each number as an estimate rather than settled fact.
