There is no objective, shared ranking of European wrestlers across Olympic-style competition and professional wrestling. This list includes both: Olympic-style athletes are judged by medals and titles within their sport, while professional performers are judged by documented achievements, influence, longevity and audience reach. Those records are not equivalent, so the order is an editorial judgment—not an official ranking. “European” here means a wrestler from or representing a European country or wrestling tradition.

How the list is ranked

The selections balance competitive honors in each wrestler’s own discipline with longevity, influence and prominence at major events. A scripted professional championship is not treated as the same kind of achievement as an Olympic medal. Where a source makes a specific record claim, it is attributed to that source.

The 15 greatest European wrestlers

  1. George Hackenschmidt

The Estonian-born pioneer bridges amateur and professional wrestling. WWE says Hackenschmidt won the European Greco-Roman amateur championship in Vienna in 1898, turned professional in 1900 and was recognized as the first World Heavyweight Champion. His place near the top reflects both his competitive credentials and his importance to wrestling’s early professional history. WWE also reports that he lost to Frank Gotch in 1908.

  2. Rıza Kayaalp

Turkey’s Greco-Roman heavyweight is one of the most accomplished European wrestlers in modern international competition. United World Wrestling reports that Kayaalp won 13 European titles, five world titles and three Olympic medals. UWW calls him the most decorated European wrestler; that description refers to his record in the sport, and he has not won Olympic gold.

  4. Jim Londos

A Greek professional-wrestling star of the 1930s and 1940s, Londos became known for drawing major audiences well beyond Greece. WWE reports that he competed in 32 countries and attracted a crowd of nearly 100,000 in Greece. Those reach and attendance figures are WWE’s, and help explain his standing as one of professional wrestling’s most prominent early international attractions. WWE says he retired in 1953.

  5. Buvaisar Saitiev

Russia’s Saitiev was one of freestyle wrestling’s standout champions, winning three Olympic gold medals across his career. His achievements at the sport’s highest level, paired with success across different Olympic cycles, place him among the era’s most accomplished European competitors.

  12. Arsen Fadzaev

Representing the Soviet Union and later Uzbekistan, Fadzaev was a dominant freestyle wrestler who won two Olympic gold medals. His international success makes him one of the leading European-trained competitors of his era, though changing national representation complicates any simple country-based label.

  13. Ivan Yarygin

His contribution is tied to the durability of the European wrestling style and to his later work as a respected in-ring performer and trainer. Two traditions, different measures

For Olympic-style wrestling, the strongest cases here are built on Games, world and continental titles: Kayaalp, Karelin, Saitiev, Batirov, Medved, Guenot, Julfalakyan, Fadzaev and Yarygin. Professional wrestling has a different history and record system. Hackenschmidt represents its formative era; Londos its early international drawing power; André, Smith, Finlay and the Dynamite Kid later professional traditions. The list’s order weighs those achievements within their own contexts rather than pretending they can be measured on one common scoreboard.
