There is no objective, industry-wide ranking of video game anime adaptations. This list ranks ten worthwhile picks by how well each works as a story, how thoughtfully it uses its game world or characters, and how much it offers both players and newcomers. Here, “anime” means Japanese-produced animation; Western animated series such as Arcane are outside the list, even when they adapt game franchises. The picks also differ in what “adaptation” means: some retell a game, while others create new stories in its universe.

How this ranking treats game adaptations

A video game adaptation does not have to reproduce a game’s plot to belong on this list. Some entries carry familiar characters into a new story; others expand a setting or translate a game’s tone into a different medium. The ranking favors coherence for viewers who have not played the source, while also considering how well each work makes use of its game connection. Availability changes by country and over time, so check the relevant official title or service page for current options.

Top 10 video game anime adaptations

1. Cyberpunk: Edgerunners

Cyberpunk: Edgerunners is the clearest pick for viewers who want a self-contained story rooted in a game world. Netflix describes it as a 10-episode story about a street kid trying to survive in Night City; the series premiered in the United States on September 13, 2022, and was animated by Studio Trigger under director Hiroyuki Imaishi. CD PROJEKT RED, the company behind Cyberpunk 2077, produced it. The studio describes the anime as set in the game’s universe, not as a scene-by-scene adaptation of the game’s plot. That distinction makes it approachable for newcomers while giving players a familiar setting to explore. [Netflix title page; CD PROJEKT RED announcement]

The series received a nomination in the Best Adaptation category at The Game Awards 2022; that is a nomination, not a win. If the show leaves you curious about its setting, Cyberpunk 2077 is the game behind the shared universe, but playing it is not required to follow the anime. Check Netflix’s page for current regional availability. [CD PROJEKT RED announcement]

2. Pokémon

The Pokémon animated series is the most enduring game-to-screen phenomenon in this selection. It followed the Japanese launch of Pokémon Red and Pokémon Green in 1996, premiering in 1998. The Pokémon Company International reports more than 1,000 animated-series episodes across 25 seasons, alongside more than 380 million video games sold worldwide. Those company-reported figures make the scale of the franchise unmistakable, though sheer longevity is not the same as one continuous story: viewers can choose among many eras and series. The franchise company also reports animation licensing in 177 countries and regions and over 30 languages. [The Pokémon Company International, undated corporate page, accessed October 8, 2026]

Unlike a direct retelling of a single game campaign, the anime draws on the games’ creatures and world to tell ongoing adventures. It is an inviting option for families and viewers who want an expansive franchise rather than one compact adaptation. The Pokémon Company’s figures are a snapshot and may be updated; check official Pokémon channels for current series availability.

3. Castlevania

Castlevania earns a place for bringing a long-running game franchise into animation. Konami says the action-adventure video-game series debuted in 1986 and notes that its legacy extends into manga and an animated series. The connection is firm, but the official material cited here does not establish a particular critical ranking or provide enough detail to compare the show’s plot with individual games. Its strength in this list is the durable game-to-animation lineage rather than a claim that it retells one specific title. Consult the official portal for current series and franchise information. 4. Tales of Symphonia: The Animation

This OVA adaptation is a natural choice for viewers drawn to Japanese role-playing games and their story-led worlds. It adapts the game’s characters and setting rather than serving as a loose series inspired by a broad franchise. Its placement reflects the appeal of seeing a game narrative translated into a more direct animated form; viewers unfamiliar with the game may find that kind of adaptation less immediately self-contained than Edgerunners.

5. Persona 4: The Animation

Persona 4: The Animation brings the game’s investigation and supernatural mystery into a TV series. It is best suited to viewers who enjoy character ensembles and a mystery that unfolds over time. The game’s structure and relationships are part of its appeal, so the adaptation’s strongest draw is its connection to that particular story rather than a wholly independent entry point to the franchise.

6. Steins;Gate

Steins;Gate is an adaptation of a visual novel, a story-focused form of video game. Its appeal lies in carrying a choice-driven, character-centered premise into a linear animated narrative. It belongs here for readers who count visual novels as games and want a science-fiction story whose game origins are more about branching narrative and character development than action.

7. Pokémon: The First Movie

The first Pokémon feature film offers a concentrated alternative to the television series. It uses the franchise’s game-born world and characters in a standalone movie format, making it a straightforward option for viewers who do not want to start a long-running series. Its place below the franchise entry reflects the narrower scope of a single film.

8. Sonic X

Sonic X adapts the recognizable Sonic cast and game universe into an animated adventure. The appeal is its character-led take on a familiar game franchise, especially for viewers who want a lighter series rather than a direct reconstruction of a particular game’s events.

9. Bayonetta: Bloody Fate

Bayonetta: Bloody Fate translates the action game’s central character and supernatural style into a feature-length anime. It is a pick for viewers who want a more compact adaptation built around a distinctive game protagonist, rather than an extended series or an expansive franchise history.

10. Arcane

Arcane is included as an explicit boundary case: it is Western animation, not Japanese-produced anime under this list’s definition. Riot Games calls it its first animated series, made with Fortiche, and identifies Vi and Jinx as protagonists who originated as League of Legends champions. It earns a place among game adaptations because it develops a game franchise’s characters and world into a standalone animated story, but readers using “anime” strictly to mean Japanese animation should skip this entry. Which one should you watch first?

  • For a self-contained story in a game world: start with Cyberpunk: Edgerunners.
  • For a huge, ongoing franchise: choose Pokémon and pick a series era that appeals to you.
  • For an established game-to-animation legacy: try Castlevania.
  • If you include Western animation inspired by games: add Arcane to your watchlist, while keeping its category distinction in mind.

These are editorial recommendations, not a consensus ranking. The right starting point depends on whether you want a complete short story, an open-ended franchise, or an adaptation closely tied to a specific game.
