Farhan Akhtar gives the film its strongest anchor, while Mrunal Thakur and Paresh Rawal bring welcome support; the main reservation is that the story’s many strands compete for focus.
What is Toofaan about?
Directed by Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra, Toofaan follows Aziz Ali, also known as Ajju, from his life as a local goon to the boxing ring. His relationship with Ananya and his training under coach Nana Prabhu shape that change. The film stars Farhan Akhtar as Aziz, Mrunal Thakur as Ananya and Paresh Rawal as Nana Prabhu. Prime Video lists the film and its principal cast; Rotten Tomatoes lists July 16, 2021, as its streaming release date.
How strong are the performances?
Farhan Akhtar carries the film
Akhtar’s physical commitment and screen presence are the most consistent strengths in the critical response. Both Phil Hoad of The Guardian and Vibha Maru of India Today praised his work, with Hoad noting his charm and physical transformation and Maru highlighting the role’s physical and emotional demands. That central performance gives Aziz’s move into boxing a human focus even when the film’s broader storytelling becomes less assured.
Mrunal Thakur and Paresh Rawal add substance
Thakur plays Ananya, whose relationship with Aziz is part of the story’s emotional life. Maru described her as watchable. Rawal’s Nana Prabhu is the stern coach guiding Aziz’s boxing journey; Maru singled out his performance positively. These roles give the film more than a single point of interest, though the expanding set of storylines also contributes to its uneven focus.

- EFFECTIVE IMPACT DISPERSION – Are your training gloves affecting your accuracy? The RDX gloves dissipate the force of impact across the specially made, pre-curved anatomical structure of the sparring gloves due to the presence of Quadro Dome 3 padding, which uses EVA foam and SpongeX sheet. This results in a comfortable training experience for the users of the RDX heavy boxing gloves.
- PATENT PENDING LOMA TECH DESIGN – Do you face trouble forming the perfect fist, while using boxing gloves ? RDX gloves feature a PATENT PENDING single seamless LOMA Tech design used in the palm area and thumb of the boxing gloves. This helps create an improved alignment between the fist and thumb and along with an especially designed attached thumb allows the trainees to form the perfect fist and punch better with the training gloves.
- EXCEPTIONALLY DURABLE MATERIAL – No matter how hard you punch these gloves make sure to outlast your intense training. The use of advanced caliber Maya Hide ConvEX Skin Leather in the KARA Series training gloves makes them durable and reliable for long-term use while also providing a superior look and feel during Boxing, Muay Thai, MMA, Kickboxing, and heavy bag training sessions among other similar sports.
- FULL WRAPAROUND WRIST SUPPORT – A hassle-free design with sufficient support for your wrists. The hook and loop Fastener straps provide a secure fit and make it easy to put on or take off the kickboxing gloves for men and women along with providing better wrist support due to the full wraparound wrist strap, while the dual stitching in the heavy bag gloves makes them durable and resilient for extensive training sessions.
- SWEAT-FREE EXPERIENCE – Bid farewell to those sweaty palms and hands. With multiple ventilation holes strategically placed in the thumb sections of the lightweight boxing gloves, RDX ensures proper airflow management so that its customers get a sweat-free experience. Furthermore, the advanced perforated sheet for breathable ventilation in the palm area is sweat-wicking and minimizes sweat accumulation.
Where does the film lose focus?
The central criticism is not a lack of ambition but the difficulty of balancing it. Maru’s India Today review calls the film scattered and overfull, arguing that its multiple subjects weaken the boxing story. Hoad’s Guardian review likewise finds that the film moves from gritty realism into sentimental, formulaic melodrama, and that it hurries through its sociopolitical themes. Hoad’s concise verdict was: “Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra’s film has high ambition but dodges complexity in favour of overheated melodrama.”
The two reviews converge on Akhtar’s strengths but describe the film’s weaknesses from different angles: one stresses how crowded the material feels, the other how quickly it converts difficult themes into familiar emotional beats. For viewers who want a boxing drama tightly focused on training and competition, that shift may frustrate. Those more interested in a broad character story—with romance, social concerns and a sports narrative together—may find more to engage with, even if the balance is imperfect.

Is Toofaan worth watching?
It is a reasonable choice for viewers drawn to Akhtar’s performance or to Indian sports dramas that combine the ring with a larger personal story. The acting is the clearest recommendation; the screenplay’s uneven focus is the main caveat. It is less compelling as a disciplined, boxing-first drama than as a performance-led story with several competing ambitions.
Where can you watch Toofaan?
Prime Video lists Toofaan. Rotten Tomatoes’ listing also names Prime Video and Apple TV as watch options. These listings are snapshots, not a guarantee of availability: check the services in your country, since catalogs and access can vary by region. The listed runtime also differs by source—Prime Video gives 2h 41m, Rotten Tomatoes 2h 43m and India Today 2h 47m—so no single precise duration is established.

What did critics and viewers rate it?
Rotten Tomatoes displayed a 50% Tomatometer from 16 critic reviews when accessed on October 8, 2026. Its Popcornmeter was based on fewer than 50 audience ratings at that time. Both figures are small-sample, changeable snapshots rather than fixed measures of the film’s reception; the critic percentage also reflects a limited set of reviews, not a universal verdict.
