Tony Galati’s announcement that he would run for Western Australia’s Baldivis seat was an April Fool’s prank, he confirmed on 1 April 2016. Public support briefly made him consider a genuine independent campaign, but the next day he said he was putting the idea aside after legal advice about his company directorship.
What Galati announced on 1 April 2016
PerthNow reported at 11:35am on 1 April 2016 that Galati, the businessman behind Spud Shed, had said on 6PR’s breakfast show that he would run as an independent for the Western Australian state seat of Baldivis. He later told PerthNow that the announcement was an April Fool’s prank. He also said he would not rule out a state-politics run in the future. PerthNow’s 1 April report and The West Australian’s coverage described the original item as a gag.
The announcement named Reece Whitby, then a newly endorsed Labor candidate for Baldivis, as a likely opponent. Whitby told the radio show he had been surprised by the report and would welcome the challenge, according to PerthNow.
Why the prank briefly looked like a real campaign
The story shifted after listeners responded. In follow-up coverage on 2 April, The West Australian quoted Galati saying public support had made him take the possibility seriously: “I’d thought about (running for Parliament) in the past and it did start as a joke this morning and then the amount of support that I’ve had from all different levels — I seriously can’t ignore it,” he said. The West Australian’s 2 April report records that brief reconsideration.

That reconsideration was not a completed candidacy or an ongoing campaign. PerthNow reported on 2 April that Galati had spoken with lawyers, who advised that running would require him to resign as a director of his company. He said his business was where his passion was at the time and put the political idea aside, while leaving open the possibility of politics later. PerthNow’s 2 April follow-up describes that decision.
