Toni Braxton said her management told her not to disclose her lupus diagnosis, warning that people might be afraid to insure a “sick” celebrity and that she could lose work. In an April 2024 interview on the SHE MD Podcast, she described the pressure to stay quiet, the work she said she initially lost, and why she eventually chose to speak publicly.

What Toni Braxton said about being told to hide her diagnosis

In an interview published April 16, 2024, Braxton recalled being told, “I was told to hide that I had lupus. Like, ‘Don’t tell anyone,’” as reported by Essence’s coverage of the SHE MD Podcast conversation. Co-host Thais Aliabadi, M.D., asked her who had told her.

Braxton said the concern was that employers or event organizers might be reluctant to insure a performer they understood to be ill. Essence quoted her recalling the warning: “People get scared around sick celebrities. Nobody gets insured,” and her account that she could not get insured. She also said, “You would not get work,” describing fears that she might collapse onstage.

These statements describe Braxton’s account of what her management told her and how she experienced the consequences. They do not establish a general rule about insurance eligibility or hiring people with lupus.

Her diagnosis, public disclosure and the work she described losing

According to the dated interview coverage, Braxton was diagnosed with lupus in 2008 and went public with the diagnosis in 2010. She said she initially lost performance work after being advised to keep the diagnosis private. The report does not establish the extent or duration of those work losses beyond her recollection.

What she said about getting diagnosed

Braxton recalled seeing at least six doctors before receiving her diagnosis. That number describes her personal diagnostic path, not a typical number of doctors for people with lupus.

Daniel Jeffrey Wallace, M.D., the rheumatologist identified in the coverage as the doctor who diagnosed Braxton, said that for people with non-organ-threatening lupus, diagnosis takes an average of three and a half years and involves an average of four different doctors. Wallace made that statement in the 2024 interview coverage; it should not be read as an independently verified current estimate or applied to every form of lupus.

Why Braxton chose to speak publicly

Braxton said she wanted to help others by being an advocate. Essence quoted her saying it was “important that I pioneer and be an advocate,” and that she hoped sharing her story could help someone. Her message was direct: “There’s nothing to be ashamed of. Nothing.”

Her account illustrates the personal tension she described between protecting work opportunities and being open about a diagnosis. It does not establish her present health status, treatment or prognosis.
