Tommy Lee Jones appears in Arthur Hiller’s Love Story (1970) as Hank—not as one of the romantic leads. The drama centers on Harvard students Oliver (Ryan O’Neal) and Jenny (Ali MacGraw), whose relationship faces family opposition and a later crisis.
What role does Tommy Lee Jones play?
Jones is credited as Hank in the film’s cast listings from Paramount and Apple TV. The available credits establish an early film appearance, but do not establish that Love Story was his career breakthrough.

Oliver and Jenny are the central couple: Oliver comes from a wealthy family, and his father opposes the marriage. The studio synopsis says a serious crisis later tests the pair. Calling the film “tragic” reflects that plot description; “beloved” is promotional language, not a measured audience finding.
How the film connects to Erich Segal’s novel
Paramount describes Love Story as based on Erich Segal’s bestselling novel. Apple TV adds that Segal shaped the novel from his screenplay while the film was in production. The book and movie therefore have a close, intertwined origin rather than a simple account of a finished novel later adapted for the screen.

Awards and restoration
Apple TV lists seven Academy Award nominations, including Best Picture, and one win: Francis Lai’s score. Apple does not state the year of that listing. Paramount says the film was newly restored from a 4K film transfer for its 50th anniversary; that is the studio’s description of the restoration.
Paramount’s page also lists a Leonard Maltin feature, a TCM introduction by Ben Mankiewicz, commentary by director Arthur Hiller, a retrospective, and a theatrical trailer among the special features. Those extras are listed by the studio, but availability may depend on the edition.

Where can you watch Love Story for free?
There is no established universal free stream. Netflix’s Seychelles listing says the film is unavailable there, illustrating that catalogs differ by country. A Japan viewing guide claims the full film is available free on an official YouTube channel, but that claim does not establish rights status or availability elsewhere.
Check the current listing for your country and provider before watching. A free offer reported for one market should not be treated as a global or permanent option.
