Tom Hanks apologized to actor and podcaster Connor Ratliff in 2022, years after Ratliff said he was dropped from a small role in Band of Brothers because Hanks thought he had “dead eyes.” Hanks accepted responsibility for the decision, but the later conversation does not independently establish every detail of the original casting discussion.
What Connor Ratliff says happened
Ratliff said he auditioned for a small part in the HBO miniseries Band of Brothers, was initially cast, and was removed before filming. He said the explanation relayed to him was that Hanks thought he had “dead eyes.” That phrase is Ratliff’s account of what he was told, not a documented transcript of the original casting conversation. The Guardian’s 2022 interview with Ratliff recounts his version of events.
What Hanks said when he apologized
Hanks discussed the incident with Ratliff on Dead Eyes in March 2022. According to The Independent’s report of the conversation, Hanks said he did not initially remember the episode, then acknowledged that the casting decision was his: “This was without a doubt the act of the director, and that was me.” He described Ratliff’s story as “bone-chilling,” said he took “full responsibility,” and apologized.
Hanks also explained that a director may make a subtle casting choice to steer a story, and offered possible reasons he might have given at the time. Those possibilities were retrospective speculation, not confirmed motives for removing Ratliff.

How the story became a podcast
Ratliff turned the unanswered question into Dead Eyes, a comic podcast about rejection and show business. Apple Podcasts’ show listing describes it as Ratliff’s quest to learn why he was fired from the small role in the 2001 miniseries. The listing dates the first episode, “He’s Having Second Thoughts,” to January 23, 2020. Its description says Ratliff was fired by Hanks for supposedly having “dead eyes”; that is the program’s framing of Ratliff’s account, not separate verification of the original casting decision.

Hanks’s later acknowledgment supports the central point that he accepted responsibility as the director who made the decision. It does not settle every detail of what happened at the time, including the precise words used in the original discussion or the full reasoning behind the casting change. Ratliff, for his part, told The Guardian that he viewed the exchange with Hanks as a genuine conversation rather than a press-trained interview; that remains Ratliff’s characterization of it.
