Tom Cruise received an Academy Honorary Award at the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences’ 16th Governors Awards on Sunday, November 16, 2025, at the Ray Dolby Ballroom at Ovation Hollywood. The honor was conferred by the Academy’s Board of Governors. It is not a competitive Oscar for a particular film or performance, so it adds neither a nomination nor a win to his competitive record.
How the award was announced
The Academy announced the selection on June 17, 2025. In that announcement, Academy President Janet Yang said: “Tom Cruise’s incredible commitment to our filmmaking community, to the theatrical experience, and to the stunts community has inspired us all.”
The Academy describes the Governors Awards as honors selected by its Board of Governors. According to its official overview, a special spring meeting selects the recipients, and up to four Governors Awards may be presented in a given Awards year. Three award types fall under this umbrella, and each has its own selection basis:

Cruise’s award was the Honorary Award. The official 2025 ceremony record lists him under “Honorary Award,” not under the Thalberg or Hersholt categories.

Why the Academy honored him
The Academy’s stated rationale rests on three areas of his work:
- The filmmaking community. The Academy called him one of the most recognized and highest-grossing actors of his generation and pointed to his broader role within the industry.
- Theatrical exhibition. The Academy cited his advocacy for movie theaters and his role in helping the industry through a difficult period during the COVID-19 pandemic.
- Stunts. The Academy highlighted that he performs many of his own stunts, a point that also anchors the stunts-community language in Yang’s statement.
The Academy’s cited filmography includes Born on the Fourth of July, Jerry Maguire, Magnolia, and Top Gun: Maverick. The first three are cited for his acting nominations, and Top Gun: Maverick for his Best Picture nomination as a producer.

Honorary Award versus a competitive Oscar
Readers often ask whether this honor finally brought Cruise a competitive Oscar. It did not. According to the Associated Press report published November 17, 2025, he had four competitive Oscar nominations at the time: three for acting, for Born on the Fourth of July, Jerry Maguire, and Magnolia, and one for Best Picture as a producer on Top Gun: Maverick. The same report described no competitive win as of that date.
The distinction matters for how the honor is described. A competitive Oscar is decided by the voting membership in a specific category. An Honorary Award is decided by the Board of Governors and recognizes a body of work or service rather than a single nominated achievement.

What Cruise said in his acceptance speech
The Associated Press quoted several lines from his remarks. On what filmmaking means to him, he said: “Making movies is not what I do, it’s who I am.” On the communal experience of cinema, he said: “In that theater we laugh together, we feel together, we hope together.”
He closed on his commitment to the art form: “I will always do everything I can to help this art form,” Cruise said. “To support and champion new voices, to protect what makes cinema powerful. Hopefully without too many more broken bones.”

The other 2025 honorees
Debbie Allen, also named for an Academy Honorary Award, is a choreographer, actor, and producer with nearly five decades of screen work. The Academy Press Office noted that she has choreographed seven Academy Awards ceremonies. Dolly Parton’s Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award was a separate category, so her honor should not be read as the same award Cruise received.
For event context, the Academy’s own release describes more than 10,500 Academy members, a figure about the membership in general rather than about the honorees.
