Written and directed by Michael Shanks in his feature debut, the film stars married actors Dave Franco and Alison Brie as Tim and Millie.
Although its premise involves graphic transformation, Together is not simply a creature feature. Its central idea is the way love, habit and emotional dependence can blur the boundaries between two people.

What is Together about?
Tim and Millie leave the city for a new life in the countryside. The move is supposed to give the couple a fresh start, but their existing tensions follow them. Their relationship is already strained by different expectations about the future, including questions about commitment, independence and whether they still want the same life.
After an encounter with an unnatural force, those relationship problems acquire a horrifying physical dimension. Tim and Millie’s bodies begin to change, and the couple is forced to confront what it means to be attached to another person—literally as well as psychologically.

- For centuries, people have called out to the universe looking for answers - in Disney and Pixar's all-new feature film Elio, the universe calls back!
The film’s horror grows from that collision between intimacy and loss of control. A relationship can offer security, but it can also become a system of dependence in which neither person knows where the self ends and the partnership begins.
A body-horror metaphor for codependency
Michael Shanks frames the supernatural transformation as an exploration of codependency and emotional attachment. The film asks whether complete closeness is actually desirable, and what happens when the wish to remain together becomes stronger than either person’s ability to remain separate.
That makes Together a hybrid rather than a conventional relationship drama or a straightforward horror film. Its domestic arguments and awkward silences are as important as its more graphic sequences. Dark comedy comes from the absurdity of trying to manage an impossible bodily condition while still dealing with the ordinary frustrations of living as a couple.
The approach also gives the film a distinctive tension: Tim and Millie may want relief from their relationship, but the supernatural force makes separation increasingly difficult. The horror is therefore not only about what their bodies become. It is about the fear that intimacy can erase individuality.

Franco and Brie’s real-life marriage is an unavoidable part of the film’s publicity, because the two actors play a married couple whose partnership is under pressure. The legal status needs to be described carefully. On February 20, 2026, the U.S. District Court for the Central District of California denied the defendants’ motion to dismiss, allowing the claims to proceed. That decision was procedural; it was not a finding that Together infringed copyright or that plagiarism had been proven. The defendants’ position, as reported by Variety, was that the two works were “not remotely similar.”

The Bottom Line
Together uses supernatural body horror to turn the anxieties of a troubled relationship into a physical nightmare. Its 102-minute story follows Tim and Millie through a transformation that makes emotional codependency impossible to ignore, while Franco and Brie’s real-life marriage adds an extra layer to the film’s presentation without changing the fictional nature of their roles. It is best approached as an uneasy blend of relationship drama, dark comedy and graphic horror—not as a conventional romance or a straightforward monster movie.
