Todd Snider, the Americana and alt-country songwriter known for “Alright Guy,” “Beer Run” and “I Can’t Complain,” died on November 14, 2025, at age 59. His label announced his death the next day. The early account that he had been assaulted outside a Utah hotel was later qualified by police, who said they could not confirm an assault and considered a fall aboard his tour bus possible. Police reported that the Utah injuries did not appear related to his death; the family-reported cause recorded in the police report was pneumonia/sepsis.
What happened to Todd Snider?
The accounts changed as police investigated the injuries Snider sustained in the Salt Lake City area. Management initially said he had been the victim of a violent assault outside his hotel. In a later account based on the final police report, investigators said they could not confirm an assault, found no evidence of one in the hotel parking lot and considered a fall aboard the tour bus possible.

- October 31–November 1, 2025: Snider’s band was in the Salt Lake City area for a November 1 show. Police placed the likely window for his injuries aboard the bus between approximately 7:46 and 8:50 p.m. on October 31. They did not receive a direct statement from Snider, according to KSL’s account of the final police report.
- Initial public account: Management said Snider had suffered severe injuries in a violent assault outside his hotel, and the tour was canceled. That was the initial allegation, not a finding established by the later police investigation, as reported by The Guardian.
- Following days: Snider received medical care and was arrested after a hospital dispute. KSL reported that police arrested him on investigation of disorderly conduct, trespassing and making a threat of violence. Those were arrest allegations, not convictions.
- November 14–15: After Snider returned to Nashville, friends and family reported that he had pneumonia and that his condition worsened. His label announced on November 15 that he had died the previous day, at 59. The Associated Press covered the announcement and family updates.
What was reported as the cause of death?
KSL reported that police recorded the family’s report of pneumonia/sepsis as the cause of death. The report said no autopsy would be performed. This is a family-reported cause documented in police reporting, not an autopsy determination. Police said the injuries sustained in Utah did not appear related to Snider’s death.
Why Todd Snider mattered to alt-country
Snider spent roughly three decades writing and performing music that crossed folk, rock and country. His songs “Alright Guy,” “Beer Run” and “I Can’t Complain” became among his best known. He released early records through Jimmy Buffett’s Margaritaville label and later recorded for John Prine’s Oh Boy label. Guy Clark, Prine and Kris Kristofferson were among the artists who influenced or mentored him, according to the Associated Press.

The Los Angeles Times reported on his career and album release.
In a tribute reported by The Guardian, Snider’s label, Aimless, Inc., said: “He relayed so much tenderness and sensitivity through his songs, and showed many of us how to look at the world through a different lens.”
