Todd McFarlane’s current net worth has not been publicly verified. The only dollar figure with a traceable source is a Forbes estimate of $35 million, dated May 1996, as reported by Phoenix New Times. That number is about three decades old and should not be presented as his present wealth. This article explains where the figure comes from, what the available sources document about his business, and how to judge any newer number you encounter.
The only sourced dollar figure is from 1996
A Phoenix New Times profile titled The Devil and Todd McFarlane reported that Forbes estimated his net worth at $35 million. The profile places that estimate in May 1996. It is a historical reference point for a specific year, not a valuation that can be carried forward to 2026.
Why a current figure cannot be confirmed
Net-worth numbers for private individuals are usually built from company ownership stakes, income, and asset holdings. Verifying one requires figures that are attributable and recent. The sources available for this article do not include any of the following:
- A recent personal financial disclosure by McFarlane.
- Audited financial statements for Image Comics or McFarlane Toys that show his ownership stake.
- A dated, named-method estimate from a financial publication later than the 1996 Forbes figure.
Sales milestones and company founding dates are not substitutes for these. A figure such as “1.7 million copies sold” describes a publication’s sales, not an individual’s income or equity, and a company’s existence says nothing about its value or the founder’s share of it.

McFarlane’s career has run across comics publishing, collectible toys, and entertainment adaptations. The following points are documented by the sources cited, and each is limited to what those sources state.
Spawn and Image Comics
Image Comics lists McFarlane as the creator of Spawn and as a co-founder and president of the publisher. Its creator biography states that the first issue of Spawn published by Image sold 1.7 million copies. That page does not state the year of the sales milestone, so the figure should be cited without a date unless you confirm one elsewhere.

McFarlane Toys
The same Image Comics biography identifies him as the founder of McFarlane Toys and dates the company to 1994. A Washington Post business profile dated December 21, 2023, McFarlane Toys has made Todd McFarlane an indie magnate, describes his move from comic artist to toy-company leader and the company’s collector-oriented figures. That profile is qualitative. It does not publish revenue, profit, or his personal holdings.
Creator ownership at Image
The Washington Post describes Image’s mission as letting comic creators own what they create and benefit from related business opportunities, including adaptation and commercialization. That context explains why the Image model matters to his career. It does not establish how much of Image, or of any other company, he owns today.

How to read any net-worth number you find
Before repeating a figure about McFarlane, check it against these points:
- Confirm the date. A figure without a date cannot be placed in time, and a 1996 estimate is not a current one.
- Identify the source and whether it is attributed. A named publication reporting another outlet’s estimate should be cited as that, with both names.
- Look for a stated method. An estimate that does not explain how it was built is weaker than one that does.
- Separate personal wealth from company metrics. Sales, unit counts, and company founding dates describe businesses, not an individual’s net worth.
- Be skeptical of unattributed aggregator pages. A round number with no source and no date is not verification.
If you need a dollar figure for a citation, use the 1996 Forbes estimate with its date and attribution, or omit a dollar amount and describe the business record instead.
