- One of the most prolific, self-directed creative forces in country's modern era
- Carrie Underwood posted: “Saddle up the horses, Jesus, ‘cause a true blue COWBOY just made his ride up to heaven!!!”
- Jason Aldean called it “a sad day” for country music and described Keith as “a huge presence in our business and someone we all looked up to and respected.”
- Crystal Gayle said she was heartbroken, called herself a longtime fan, and remembered singing with him. She called him “a great American.”
- Old Dominion wrote, “Raising our red solos tonight,” a nod to Keith’s 2011 hit “Red Solo Cup.”
- Zach Bryan recalled hearing Keith’s music in his father’s car, while John Rich praised him as a first-class singer-songwriter.
The Associated Press also reported tributes from Ricky Skaggs, Kristin Chenoweth, Randy Houser, Austin Burke, Cole Swindell and Janie Fricke. These were among the public responses reported at the time, not a complete record of every tribute.
Kyle Young, CEO of the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum, described Keith’s story as distinctly American, pointing to his early work as an oil-field roughneck and his determination to make his own place in country music. The museum’s account of his career likewise spans showmanship, humor and songs about American resolve.

- The familiar maxim of the triple threat - singer, songwriter, entertainer - didn't begin to cover it for Toby Keith, one of the most prolific self-directed creative forces in country's modern era
Why did Keith’s music reach such a wide audience?
Keith’s catalogue did not fit one tone. He became prominent in the 1990s with “Should’ve Been a Cowboy,” which the Associated Press reported received three million radio plays and was the most-played country song of that decade. His hits moved between cowboy imagery, barroom comedy, patriotic anthems and more reflective writing.
- Cowboy and mainstream country: “Should’ve Been a Cowboy” and “How Do You Like Me Now?!” helped establish his confident, direct style.
- Barroom humor: “I Love This Bar,” “As Good as I Once Was” and “Red Solo Cup” leaned into comic storytelling and rowdy singalongs.
- Patriotic songs: “Courtesy of the Red, White, & Blue (The Angry American),” “American Soldier” and “Made in America” made national identity and service central subjects.
- Reflective late-career work: “Don’t Let the Old Man In” showed a more contemplative side.
The range helps explain why tributes came from artists with different styles and generations of country audiences. It also means that describing Keith only as a patriotic singer or only as a comic entertainer leaves out important parts of his work.

What was the controversy around “Courtesy of the Red, White, & Blue”?
Keith wrote “Courtesy of the Red, White and Blue (The Angry American)” after the September 11 attacks and the death of his father, an Army veteran. According to the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum, he wrote it in about twenty minutes and first performed it for service members. He released it after they urged him to record it; it reached No. 1 in July 2002.
The song’s blunt patriotic message also made it contentious. The museum recounts a public dispute between Keith and Natalie Maines of the Dixie Chicks over the song and its politics. That controversy is part of the song’s history, alongside its popularity with listeners who heard it as an expression of resolve after the attacks.

Keith also toured for the USO. The museum says he performed nearly 300 shows for more than 250,000 service members over two decades.
What honors did Toby Keith receive?
Keith was elected to the Country Music Hall of Fame in the Modern Era Artist category in 2024. Voting concluded three days before his death, making the recognition a final milestone in a career that had already earned major industry honors.
