Its screenplay is less distinctive, however, and the gap between the film’s atmospheric ambition and its familiar, uneven story keeps it from fully landing. The 2023 film is listed by Netflix, but availability varies by country.
What is To Catch a Killer about?
Damián Szifron’s 2023 crime thriller begins with a mass shooting on New Year’s Eve in Baltimore. Shailene Woodley plays Eleanor Falco, a police officer recruited to assist an FBI investigation. Ben Mendelsohn and Jovan Adepo also star.
The premise puts an inexperienced investigator inside a high-pressure case, giving the film room to build tension around the search and the people drawn into it. It is a fictional story, not a dramatization of a documented case: Netflix Tudum says Szifron and Jonathan Wakeham co-wrote an original screenplay, rather than adapting a book. Netflix Tudum’s film guide provides the premise, cast and authorship details.
Is To Catch a Killer worth watching?
It is worth considering if you enjoy moody, performance-led thrillers and can accept a screenplay that feels less original than its setup. The film’s strongest case is its direction and acting; its weaker one is the story’s familiar, sometimes messy construction.

- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Rotten Tomatoes’ critics consensus captures that tension: “Damián David Szifron’s stylish direction and fine performances bolster To Catch a Killer’s case, but a derivative script throws this thriller off course.” That is the aggregator’s consensus, not a quotation from one critic. In a review dated November 17, 2023, Jenny Nulf of The Austin Chronicle called it “an aggressively stale procedural.” Kevin Maher of The Times (UK), reviewing it on May 26, 2023, described it as “moody but very messy.” The assessments point to the same trade-off: atmosphere and performances can hold attention, but the screenplay does not give the thriller an equally fresh or coherent foundation. Rotten Tomatoes’ film page carries the consensus and selected reviews.

Why the film’s strengths do not fully resolve its weaknesses
Stylish direction meets a familiar script
The premise offers a clear engine for suspense: a major crime, an urgent investigation and an officer brought into a case with consequences beyond routine police work. Szifron gives the film a moody, controlled feel, but the central criticism is that the script follows well-worn procedural territory. As a result, atmosphere does more work than originality.
Strong performances, limited character development
Woodley’s Eleanor is the entry point into the investigation, while Mendelsohn and Adepo help give the ensemble weight. The performances are among the film’s better-reviewed elements, but effective acting cannot by itself make every character feel fully developed. That imbalance contributes to the sense of a promising thriller that does not consistently deepen its people or its ideas.

A compelling setup needs a satisfying payoff
The film invites viewers to expect suspense from the investigation and its unfolding stakes. The critical reservations concern the execution of that promise—especially the screenplay’s familiarity and unevenness—not any established finding that its police or forensic details are factually wrong. The available cited assessments do not establish scene-specific accuracy claims.
