The official story chronology runs from five years before the Union to Union Year 41. It is not the anime’s intended watch order: To Be Hero X tells its story nonlinearly, and Crunchyroll cautions that chronological viewing is not the recommended way to watch. The years below are fictional dates relative to the Union, not Gregorian calendar years.
Before the Union
The official To Be Hero X history dates the foundations of the story to the years before the Union was established:
- Five years before the Union: Trust values are discovered.
- Three years before the Union: Hero Zero gains seemingly inexhaustible Trust and is revered as a god.
- Two years before the Union: Zero kills a hero who opposed him and is ultimately consumed by Fear values.
- One year before the Union: In the Downfall, an alliance of heroes led by the elder Soulen defeats Zero, who had brought the world into fear.
Union Years 1–20: institutions and early heroes
- Year 1: The Union Commission is established.
- Year 2: The first tournament takes place. Tournaments become a key anchor in the history: the official series overview says they occur every two years and update Trust values and hero rankings.
- Year 8: Miji establishes DOS.
- Year 18: During a spaceship investigation, Arshon discovers and brings back an alien life-form.
- Year 19: The social platform FOMO is created.
- Year 20: Yang Cheng loses his parents as a child and is saved by Soulen. Wang Yi signs with Mighty Glory and debuts as Moksatsu.
Union Years 22–28: new identities and beginnings
- Year 22: Arshon is assassinated as Moksatsu’s 175th target. Xiao Chang and Da Chang sign with FOMO and debut as Little Johnny and Big Johnny.
- Year 23: A major passenger-plane crash occurs, and Liu Zhen finds Cyan, the sole survivor. Zhang Lan leaves Moksatsu, taking Wang Nono.
- Year 26: At age 12, Liu Yuwei enters the Union National University.
- Year 28: Cyan meets Luo, who has been moved between institutions and treated as a bringer of misfortune. Liu Yuwei graduates from the Union National University as its youngest graduate and begins to be called Queen. Five-year-old Loli sees Queen’s graduation speech and decides to become a hero.
Union Years 32–38: the title of X changes hands
- Year 32: In the 16th Union tournament final, Boire defeats Smile, the incumbent X, becoming the second woman to hold the title.
- Year 34: Cyan escapes from an institution. A firefighter becomes a hero after saving a girl. Hero agencies go through a period of restructuring and new formations.
- Year 35: Cyan signs a hero contract with DOS.
- Year 36: With support from Shang Chao and Xia Qing, Yang Cheng begins working as the “new Soulen.” At a Lucky Cyan concert, Yang Cheng duels the original Soulen, and their Trust values merge. A Hero Stand statue is erected. In the 18th tournament final, Queen loses and an unnamed dark horse becomes X.
- Year 37: Lucky Cyan becomes the No. 7 hero.
- Year 38: Nice and Xiao Yueqin become a “business couple.” In the 19th tournament, Queen withdraws and the mysterious X wins consecutively.
Union Years 39–41: the canceled tournament and the eve of X
- Year 39: Loli meets Wang Nono. An alien substance unaffected by Trust values or Fear particles is discovered. Moksatsu, Little Johnny, Big Johnny and Loli are set to join a spaceship investigation; Soulen and Nice appear at the investigation site inside the ship. Queen and Lucky Cyan encounter a giant monster while traveling on vacation. The ruins incident leads to the first cancellation of a scheduled tournament—the 20th—and changes the heroes’ circumstances.
- Year 40: With the 20th tournament canceled, X retains the No. 1 Trust ranking and becomes the first hero to hold the title for three consecutive tournaments or terms. At Yen Mo’s direction, Liang Long attacks Smile in an attempt to enter the top ten. Smile is overcome by Fear particles, attacks Liang Long, loses, and dies.
- Year 41: Under Nice’s direction, Tora defeats attacking Phobia clones and becomes a hero. Lin Ling takes Nice’s place; Nice becomes the No. 10 hero, followed by Lin Ling becoming No. 10. X evades an attack by the Union Commission and hero agencies and enters the tournament as No. 1. The official English episode 24 synopsis, “X,” places events on the eve of the tournament: the Commission launches a surprise night raid, while X speaks about the truth of the world in a dreamlike space.
The official history groups events by year but does not establish the precise order of every event listed under the same year. Treat each year as a cluster rather than as a complete scene-by-scene sequence.
How this timeline relates to the episode order
The year-by-year history is useful for understanding when events happen in the fictional world. Episode order serves a different purpose: it preserves the series’ nonlinear presentation and its character-arc reveals. Crunchyroll’s episode-arc and chronological-order guide, published March 2, 2026, identifies the broadcast-order arc blocks as Nice/Lin Ling (episodes 1–4), E-Soul (5–7), Lucky Cyan (8–10), Queen (11–12), Loli (13–14), Ghostblade (15–16), the Johnnies (17–19), Dragon Boy (21–22), Ahu (23), and X (24). Its chronological arc list begins with the Johnnies (episodes 17–18, first half), then Ghostblade episode 15 (first half), followed by Lucky Cyan episodes 8–9, before continuing through later arcs.
