The widely shared photos show Timothée Chalamet and Lily-Rose Depp kissing aboard a boat in Capri, Italy, in September 2019. The pair had recently appeared at the Venice Film Festival to promote The King. The images later became a meme; in 2020, Chalamet said he was embarrassed by their sudden online circulation and denied that the moment was a publicity stunt.
Where and when the boat photos were taken
The outing took place in Capri, not Venice. Venice was the preceding stop: Chalamet and Depp attended events for their film The King at the 76th Venice Film Festival on September 2, 2019. The Independent describes the boat photos as taken the following day, while a French report dates the Capri sighting to September 5. The September 5 date is reported by Madame Figaro; the available accounts do not establish a single independently confirmed date for the photographs.
A Just Jared gallery published September 9, 2019, identifies the setting as Capri. Its photos show the actors kissing aboard a boat or yacht.
How the images became a meme
The photographs spread widely online and inspired jokes and edited images, including object-labeling memes. Know Your Meme reports that PopSugar posted paparazzi photos on September 7, 2019, and identifies that publication as the reported starting point for the image’s meme circulation. That is a retrospective account of the meme’s origins, rather than independent verification of the first publication.

The jokes and ensuing speculation are not evidence that the couple arranged the photographs. The Independent notes that the images prompted publicity-stunt theories, but the cited coverage does not substantiate those claims.
What Chalamet said about the photos
In an October 2020 GQ interview, Chalamet described the boat outing as one of the best days of his life, then said he felt embarrassed when he woke up to find the pictures circulating. Grazia reproduced his remarks:
“I went to bed that night thinking that was one of the best days of my life,” he said in his recent cover interview for GQ. “I was on this boat all day with someone I really loved, and closing my eyes, I was like, indisputably, ‘That was great.’ And then waking up to all these pictures, and feeling embarrassed, and looking like a real nob? All pale?”
He continued: “And then people are like: This is a P.R. stunt. A P.R. stunt?! Do you think I’d want to look like that in front of all of you?!”
