Cole Hauser said Rip Wheeler would take on more responsibility in Yellowstone Season 5 Part 2: helping run the ranch while supporting Beth and the family during John’s absence. The comment points to a heavier practical leadership burden—not a formal transfer of ownership or legal authority.
What did Cole Hauser mean by “time to grow up”?
In remarks Hauser made during a CBS Mornings interview about Part 2, and which Dexerto reported on November 5, 2024, he said: “It’s time to grow up. So much of this year is about picking up the pieces and moving forward. There’s a big responsibility on Rip to help run the ranch and also support Beth and the family.” Dexerto’s report attributes the comment to Hauser; it is the actor’s description of Rip’s responsibilities, not a statement of legal succession.
How could Rip lead the ranch without John?
Taking on day-to-day responsibility
Hauser’s wording describes Rip helping run the ranch. That means shouldering more of its practical work and responsibilities while John is absent; it does not establish that Rip inherits the property or formally becomes the head of the Dutton family.
Supporting Beth and the family
The responsibility Hauser describes is broader than ranch operations. Rip is also meant to support Beth and the family as they try to move forward. His role, as Hauser framed it, combines work at the ranch with personal loyalty to the people closest to him.

What the interview does—and does not—tell viewers
Hauser plays Rip Wheeler, one of the characters listed alongside Kevin Costner, Luke Grimes, Kelly Reilly and Wes Bentley on Paramount+ Canada’s cast and series page. Paramount+ describes Yellowstone as a five-season story about John Dutton defending his Montana ranch and family, according to its Uruguay series page.
The interview comment was a pre-release indication of Rip’s responsibilities in Part 2, not a complete account of the story’s outcome. Paramount+’s UK episode guide lists Season 5, episode 14, “Life Is A Promise,” and says the finale reveals the fate of the ranch. The finale is therefore not an unresolved future event in that guide: see the Season 5 episode listing.
