In DC’s main comics chronology, Tim Drake’s major romantic relationships are best read as Ariana Dzerchenko, Stephanie Brown, then Bernard Dowd. The order is not perfectly sequential: Tim dates Ariana as a civilian while his Robin identity is entangled with his growing flirtation with Stephanie. Darla Aquista is a brief, one-sided attraction, not a comparable relationship.
How to read Tim Drake’s relationship timeline
This is a chronology of the principal relationships described in DC’s comics retrospectives, not a complete list of every attraction across every continuity or adaptation. The distinction matters because Tim’s secret identity creates overlap between his civilian and costumed lives.
| Person | Place in the chronology | What the relationship was |
|---|---|---|
| Ariana Dzerchenko | Early high-school stories | Tim’s civilian girlfriend; she did not know he was Robin. |
| Stephanie Brown | Begins in the same early period; returns later | A recurring romance shaped by secret identities, separation, friendship, and reconciliation. |
| Darla Aquista | During Tim and Stephanie’s relationship | Darla expressed interest, but Tim said he had no designs on her. |
| Bernard Dowd | Later comics stories | Tim’s boyfriend in later DC coverage. |
Ariana Dzerchenko: Tim’s early civilian girlfriend
In DC’s account of Tim’s high-school years, he dates Ariana as Tim Drake. She is unaware that he leads a second life as Robin. At the same time, Robin is developing a flirtation with Spoiler, the costumed identity of Stephanie Brown. DC’s 2017 retrospective describes these parallel threads directly: Tim is dating Ariana as a student while seeing a fellow vigilante as Robin. Read DC’s history of Tim Drake and Stephanie Brown.
Rather than treat Ariana and Stephanie as strictly consecutive partners, it is more accurate to say the stories overlap across Tim’s two identities. Tim tries to manage the situation by courting Stephanie out of costume under the invented name Alvin Draper. Ariana’s role belongs to this early phase; DC’s retrospective does not frame her as a later, sustained relationship.

Stephanie Brown: the recurring relationship
Stephanie first knows Robin as a fellow vigilante, not as Tim Drake. Their connection moves through flirtation, dating, conflict, and separation. Tim figures out Stephanie is Spoiler while she does not yet know who Robin is. The imbalance of secret identities and Tim’s circumstances complicate their romance.
Separation and renewed connection
Tim’s father discovers that he is Robin, and Tim gives up the mantle, adding strain to the relationship. After Stephanie returns to Gotham, the two reconnect first as close friends and later as a couple again during the Rebirth era. DC subsequently reported that they had broken up. These changes make Stephanie a recurring partner rather than a relationship with one uninterrupted status. DC’s retrospective traces their relationship; its later coverage appears in “Some Big Changes for Tim Drake.”

- Includes 2 types of head parts, cloth cape, weapon parts, and movable figure stand
- Total Height: Approx. 5.7 inches (145 mm)
Darla Aquista: an unreciprocated interest
Darla belongs in a careful account of Tim’s love-interest history only with a qualification: she expresses romantic interest in him, but DC’s account does not present them as a mutual couple. Tim tells Bernard that he has no designs on Darla and already has a girlfriend. That makes her different from Tim’s sustained relationships with Stephanie and Bernard. DC’s account of Tim and Bernard describes the exchange.
Bernard Dowd: Tim’s later boyfriend
Bernard first appears in Tim’s earlier school-era stories as a friend. In Batman: Urban Legends #4–6, the two reconnect. Tim asks Bernard on a date; later, Bernard asks Tim out, and Tim accepts. DC’s 2022 article recounts the comic storyline, while later publisher coverage identifies Bernard as Tim’s love interest and boyfriend. Read DC’s account of the Tim and Bernard storyline.

For readers who want a collected edition, DC’s catalog lists Tim Drake: Robin Vol. 2: A Case of Chaos. It collects Tim Drake: Robin #7–10 and four short stories from DC Pride: Tim Drake Special; DC’s description refers to Bernard as Tim’s boyfriend and mentions their date night. It is an optional way to read more of their story, not a collection of the entire relationship chronology.
Comics continuity and the Titans adaptation
Keep Bernard Dowd’s comics story separate from the version of Bernard in the Titans television series. DC’s 2022 article discusses both, but distinguishes the comics character from his television counterpart. The chronology above concerns Tim’s comics relationships, not a combined timeline across media.

What DC’s published accounts establish
DC’s 2025 Pride feature and its catalog description of Tim Drake: Robin Vol. 2 provide later publisher references to Bernard as Tim’s love interest and boyfriend. Those descriptions support his place as a major later partner in this chronology; they do not establish Tim’s relationship status in every comic published after them. For broader character context, see DC’s official Tim Drake character page.
